Supporting New Teachers - Blog Entry

Thanks Valorie! I wish the public system here had that rule! Within my first three years, I took on Beta Club, Pep Club, Cheerleading, and Yearbook! Most veteran teachers do not want these jobs. I enjoyed it because I like working with the children and helping them have experiences that they otherwise wouldn't have, but I had enough on my plate without adding those things. Now, I have been teaching for 7 years and have 2 small children. I feel confident to refuse the things I know I can not handle.

Parent Involvement: Primary Verses Middle - Blog Entry

You are very lucky to have that kind of relationship with your children. I hope mine feel the same way about me. I wonder if it is the pressure of of the other students in public schools or the school environment itself that makes the difference in public school and homeschooling attitudes of middle school children? Perhaps by homeschooling, you are creating a stronger bond with your children because of the time you spend together. I know my realtionship with my daughter seems to be stronger during breaks when we have more time together.

Are Single Sex Classes the Solution? - Blog Entry

Thinking about my school career, I can agree that I probably would have had less worries in an all girl environment. I have also thought that I would have liked uniforms for the simple fact of not having to worry about competing for stylish clothing. I also can agree that there probably would be more men get involved in education if it went to all male classes. We are in a great need of male teachers in lower grades.

Valorie- I agree. We have two student teachers in the primary grades now and they are poorly prepared. It seems that the colleges are teaching them how they will change lives and how to go in and change education and make it so wonderful and take every child and give them everything they do not have. While this is what you try to do, they don't mention the harrassing parents, the board on you about test scores, the children that cuss you, and the headlice that won't go away!!

I most teachers begin with good intentions but the paperwork and testing and guidelines and unsupportative parents just sometimes "burn teachers out". I wish sometimes that the system would just let teachers teach.
