School's Involvement in Homeschooling: Question Answered

30 Jun 2008 04:17 PM

I would have to strongly disagree in my area. Teachers are held highly accountable for the students' education. If your test scores and overall performance are not up to par for a few years in a row, it is likely that you will be sent to another grade level for another try or be sent through some intense meetings and observations. So yes teachers are held accountable in my area and they are strictly monitored. I think the thing that is troubling some homeschooling parents (as I was with homeschooling) is that you are only acquainted with the "good" parents, as I was only acquainted with the "failing" homeschool families. Believe it or not all parents are not invested in their children. It is sad but it is reality. School can in some cases be much safer and better and more caring than a child's home life. There are children at my school that we feed, clothe, and buy medicine for. We have even paid power bills before so the children could have water and heat.

Another thing that often troubles me is that many homeschooling parents have such a negative outlook on schools. They degrade them and the teachers in them. You are fortunate that you can homeschool. Some parents cannot. They work two or three jobs to survive. They must put their faith in the public school system and frankly I am proud of the one where I live. I am sorry that yours is so bad but htey are not all that way. These parents that are struggling and doing their best do not need to feel that they are depriving their children of a good education by sending them to a public school.

Thanks for the discussion ladies and for your opinions! That is how we get better educated on all of the world's topics!
