Conquering The Clutter... Just In Time For The Holidays - Blog Entry

10 Oct 2006 05:39 PM

Phew--so glad to be part of this club! Hate a messy house, but hate cleaning too. I try to delegate some of the jobs out to my kids, who never seem to get it as clean as I'd like. I've decided I have to shrug my shoulders sometimes and just enjoy our time together, while letting the house be untidy. If I spent every waking minute cleaning, I wouldn't be as involved in mothering. And you're right, whether I clean up or not, the mess will be back tomorrow. Sigh.

Holes in the Abstract: An Interview with Kyle - Blog Entry

04 Oct 2006 05:09 PM

Hi Christina--Kyle is working with a speech and language pathologist who helps him handle the randomness of conversation. He is learning to decipher expressions and to understand humor, little by little. He's doing very well; I see improvement each day. I think understanding abstract concepts is like code-cracking for these kids. There's a whole bunch of data swarming around them and they have to pick out tiny parts that make sense. A lot of it does escape them, however. This, for me, is one of the most puzzling aspects of autism. Kyle can read fluently out of an college textbook, but his comprehension in an ordinary story is low. Thank you so much for your comment, and please check back.

ADHD? Or is Your Child Actually Gifted? - Blog Entry

04 Oct 2006 05:02 PM

I'm delighted to hear from you--thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like your son has some incredible gifts. It's great that you are sorting things out and finding the best educational strategies for him. Perhaps he's the next Einstein! (Einstein struggled in school, too.) I plan to do some more blogs on gifted children soon. I do know this: Treat your child like he's gifted, special, and capable, and he will very likely rise to meet your expectations.

A Dance for Three -- Louise Plummer - Blog Entry

Hi Tristi--Louise Plummer was my English Professor. She gave me so much encouragement and good advice. This story was inspired by a similar situation she faced with one of her children. Louise has a hearty laugh and is so fun to be around. Thanks for reminding me of her.

FUN with FOODS for Sensory Integration Dysfunction - Blog Entry

28 Sep 2006 08:15 AM

Those are great ideas! Another fun food activity for these kids is to make a "dipping bar." Set up many little bowls, or even use an egg carton, and put various dipping sauces like ketchup, ranch, peanut butter, apple sauce, yogurt, chocolate pudding, etc. Then let the child try dipping carrots, apple slices, crackers, etc. in the different sauces. Carrotts with ketchup? Strange, but so what? If if helps get the child to try new foods and experiment, it's doing some good and fun, too.
