Step-Daughters With Uninvolved Mothers - Blog Entry

05 Apr 2006 04:28 PM

Wow, so well said. On my stepdaughter's last birthday I bought her a princess dress, cake, Gameboy, and we took her to an indoor amusement park. It was the birthday of a lifetime! We had to call her mother secretly that day and ask her to please call her daughter. Then her mother phoned and asked for a florist, to send a last-minute gift. At the end of the day, a small bouquet arrived with an attached teddy-bear. My stepdaughter cried, "It's for me from my MOM! She picked it out especially for me!" Later that night, I found my birthday girl asleep with her princess dress and Gameboy on the floor, clutching her precious teddy bear from mom.

This is what it means to be a stepmother. To accept your second place position with dignity and grace.

I've also had days where I worked for hours doing my two stepdaughters' laundry, dishes, helped them with their hair and homework, took them out to dinner, only to have one of them say, "My Mom does so much for me. I really need to send her a thank you card." There is absolutely a fantasy that girls have about their real mothers.

Nicki, we should do lunch!

Childhood Seizures: What Parents Should Know - Blog Entry

06 Mar 2006 03:02 AM

Thanks for your interest and excellent comments!

My intent with the article was to speak to parents who would be unfamilliar with seizure symptoms and may suddenly experience one unexpectedly with their special needs child. Children with severe seizure disorders must surely have parents highly educated on this topic, from their own firsthand knowledge, and would not likely need an article of this type. However, I have adjusted my article to mention the less-hopeful prognosis of those children so as to not to misinform readers. Thank you again for your comments.

Childhood Seizures: What Parents Should Know - Blog Entry

In my research, I haven't seen that an increase in seizure activity upon reaching puberty is common, although it would make sense that brain chemistry changes during that time. A child also changes in height and stature during adolescence. Thus, a second look at the medication dosage is due. It's likely the dosage needs to be increased, or else a secondary medication added. The child's specialist may need to experiment a bit. In severe cases, surgery can be considered.

The Healing Power of Pets - Blog Entry

I loved reading this! For some reason, I've been going a little crazy for pets myself. In the last six months, I've acquired four guinea pigs (incredible pets, by the way) two fish, one frog, one snail, and a cocker spaniel pup. This is in addition to my seven kids at home. You can imagine the energy at my house!

Is Snacking Getting in the Way of Weight Loss? - Blog Entry

18 Feb 2006 04:23 PM

I really needed this article. My problem is snacking late at night, after the kids go to bed. I think it's my psychological "reward" for a hard day's work. I am having the hardest time eliminating this habit! Each day I think, "tonight I am not going to eat any junk, but by evening I can't control myself. I'm good all day long, but something kicks in at night. Ugh. I'd love any advice you have.
