Thanks Ammey and everyone! I am so interested in you moms who have to deal with children who have both conditions in one (and more). How do you manage your child's diabetes when the autism makes him or her unable to understand the reason for the injections? Is it a constant battle, chasing a screaming, upset child around with a needle? I am so impressed with all of you. What dedication and hard work you must endure for the sake of your child. What has helped you get through the hard times? Do You Have BOTH Juvenile Diabetes and Autism in Your Family? - Blog Entry26 Sep 2007 04:45 PM Well, I think it's certainly safe to say that autism and diabetes can co-exist in the same child. I am still very interested in the autoimmune connection here. Ammey, my oldest son with diabetes has symptoms of autoimmune illness affecting his kidneys. This, and the fact that I have two sons with diabetes and one with autism tells me that there is a genetic factor triggering autoimmune dysfunction in our family. Anyone else? What combinations of autoimmune illness are you dealing with? Thanks everyone, for your comments! Aquarium Electrical Safety - Blog Entry23 Sep 2007 04:17 PM This is an excellent tip. Our house almost burned down when water from our salt water tank dripped onto an exposed outlet. Burned a big hole in the wall. Don't Let Your Special Needs Teen Be a Fashion Reject! - Blog Entry18 Sep 2007 06:02 AM P.S. As an extreme example, if I bought my almost-fifteen-year-old son with autism a Barney the Dinosaur T-Shirt, he would probably wear that to school, not knowing any better, and thus be a target of ridicule. It's up to me to make sure he's dressed in a way that affords him dignity and promotes good relationships. Don't Let Your Special Needs Teen Be a Fashion Reject! - Blog Entry18 Sep 2007 05:47 AM I'm not sure what is bothering you about the blog--this is mainly referring to children who are NOT able to groom or dress themselves without help, who require their parents assistance, and who would wear whatever was put in front of them because they don't have the capacity to select clothing or comprehend style trends. In a situation like this parents need to educate themselves about the kinds of styles their child's neuro-typical peers are wearing and make certain their son or daughter arrives at school with good hygeine so he or she has the best chance of making friends and relating to others. I'm sorry you feel the advice is "stupid," please remember I have a son with autism so I speak from personal experience, not just because I "think" I know what I am talking about. If your own special needs are mainly physical and not cognitive, perhaps you are perfectly well suited to select your own clothing, and I'm sure you do an excellent job on your own. Thus, this blog does not apply to you. Hyperlexia: Autism with a Twist? - Blog Entry07 Sep 2007 05:56 PM I absolutely agree. When I first read of this "disorder," I told myself, "This is autism or aspergers with a marked reading ability." Yet many current books refer to it as its own diagnosis. There is also a hyperlexia website which considers it separate and apart from autism. Yet if you read their description of the condition, it's textbook ASD.
