Putative Father's Registry--Biological Father's Rights

20 Jun 2006 08:22 AM

I hate to say it, but this is why marriage as a contract is more important for men than for women. It's a balance; he agrees to care for the woman when she is involved in child rearing, and she agrees to share children with him. When the balance is skewed (generally due to not marrying) problems happen. I feel bad for men who don't have access to their illegitimate children, but keep it zipped, guys! That one nonaction would solve 99% of the problem. (not that women overall aren't just as liable for illegitimate children, but this blog addresses the guy's problems and not the girl's -- and she has a whole different set.)

Hemingway's Polydactyl Cats

20 Jun 2006 08:12 AM

I don't own one but I've seen them play; the weirdest thing is that they can actually pick up small objects like pencils and hold them with the extra toe. Bizarre. They also seem a little smarter than other cats.

The Circumcision Debate

20 Jun 2006 08:09 AM

I didn't have any of my sons circumcised; the oldest one had some sort of rare weird issue and had to be circumcised at the age of six, but the other two are fine. The more I read about it, the happier I am with my decision.

Your Child's Been Invited To A Pox Party!

20 Jun 2006 08:03 AM

The problem with pox parties isn't the relatively mild risks of an appropriately-aged child catching chicken pox; it is with one of these children for whatever reason going out with the pox and spreading it to other people who may not be able to handle the disease, or even spreading it to his or her parents who think they're immune. This exposes Grandma, Grandpa, Baby Brother, and every stranger the child comes in contact with until after the chicken pox is over with to the disease. And the most dangerous time is the period while parents are waiting for the disease to show itself -- when the child may be contagious without parents realizing it.

A Cheap Way To See Hawaii

19 Jun 2006 11:14 PM

I found this the other day, and was thrilled! My husband's in the Navy and we're moving to Hawaii this October/November, so it's a great way to preview; can't wait till this photographer gets to Oahu!

Penn & Teller - The Bad Boys of Magic

I love Penn and Teller! Did you see the Dharma and Greg episode where Teller played a friend of Dharma's who thought he was a cat? It was hilarious!

Kelo vs. New London Eminent Domain Evictions May Be Near

05 Jun 2006 11:11 PM

I live right across the river from New London, and worked at Pfizer, who is really the Big Bad Guy in this story. New London DOES NOT CARE. At least the government doesn't, and the citizens are apathetic at best.

The sad thing is, the bad part of town is about two blocks away inland. There is nothing wrong with taking that land instead; it's where the hookers and drug dealers hang out. The land they're taking belongs to people who have lived there for years, often raising families there, and they're good people. The only reason NL is taking the land is because it is right on the river (which opens out to Long Island Sound) and Pfizer, who is remaining very quiet in this, is more interested in riverfront property for itself and its affiliates, who are already building on the properties they own. That alone should tell you the likelihood of the ordinary people winning this one.

This really is a classic land grab. Pfizer owns this area; the three big employers here are Pfizer, the casinos, and the military. The military almost closed the Subase last year, so the folks here aren't playing their cards hard on the military. The casinos are looked down on. That leaves Pfizer, and it give them a whole lot of unearned power.

Ultimately, the greed of a few people and a large company will harm all of us.

June 6, 06 - Just Another Day?

05 Jun 2006 09:45 PM

I think people see numbers as control, and that's been around for ages. I wonder if superstitious stuff like that is getting more common since it seems that the individual has less and less control over his/her life? Or if it's more common in countries where the government has a stranglehold, like in many Muslim Shari'a countries?

Why I Love The Military Lifestyle

05 Jun 2006 09:08 PM

That's right, all the states do unemployment differently. Wasn't there a law passed or presented not too long ago to force them to regularize that? Or maybe I just remember a bunch of different state laws I was reading about.

Spouse employment is one of my huge gripes, but I won't talk about it much here except in generalities. I'm planning a whole separate blog for that because I'm planning to raise cain and take names. I've already started that elsewhere -- I got the attention of an IG, believe it or not.

Military Move: Do It Yourself, Or Let The Government?

05 Jun 2006 09:05 PM

Wow! Even with our 30 boxes of books, I don't think we'll hit that. (or is it forty? Who remembers?)
