Secret Shoppers for Churches?

I have to say that one thing I love about our church is the fact that members serve in positions in the church for free. No one is paid. While we do come from a very wealthy church, the clergy are not paid, and therefore, the money is being spent on things like buildings, spreading the gospel, and welfare. I heard about a recent program kind of like the secret shopper program. Mystery guests attend churches across the country for the first time and score them on various things in 15 categories like the sermon, pre-and post-service atmosphere, seating, etc. … Continue reading

Surrogacy in the LDS Church

I have close family members and friends that have struggled with infertility. Since I don’t struggle with these same issues, sometimes I feel like I have no right to comment about any of it. But, I know that this is an issue that affects many LDS families (and non-LDS families) around the world. I can only imagine that in a church like ours, whose focus is so much on the family, it can be especially hard to struggle with infertility. It is a righteous desire to want to have children. It is hard to understand why the Lord is not … Continue reading

Resources for Children on LDS.org

As the primary president in my ward, and mother of three little ones, I’m always looking for ideas for lessons, sharing time, family home evening, etc. I have spoken before about the great website sugardoodle.net. But, it looks like the church is beefing up their website a bit to contain similar resources for parents, families, and teachers looking for additional materials online. They have created a new section of the website dedicated to children’s resources. It can be found here. I know that I am personally excited to explore what there is to offer, and what they will be adding … Continue reading

LDS Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting

This past weekend I came down with a horrible cold. It peaked on Sunday, of course, making it where I missed my meetings. I was disappointed because I really do love attending church every Sunday. But, I was grateful that I had gone to the Worldwide Leadership Training Broadcast on Saturday. It boosted my spirit, and gave me the spiritual uplift I needed for the upcoming week. If you missed it, or are not currently in a leadership position requiring you to attend, then I strongly encourage you to go watch or listen to it, here. As always, listening to … Continue reading

The Church Introduces a New Nursery Manual

For the past several years, nursery leaders and Sunbeam leaders have been teaching from the same manual. This hasn’t been a bad thing – our curriculum, as always, is inspired and our children have greatly benefited from the lessons they are taught. This last month, however, the Church released a new manual designed specifically for the nursery. The manual is entitled “Behold Your Little Ones” and has thirty lessons that are geared specifically to nursery-aged children (eighteen months to three years). In addition to full-color photographs to go along with each topic, the lessons have a line drawing that can … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – July 7th-12th

Welcome to our Week in Review! If you didn’t have the chance to join us every day here in LDS, here’s your opportunity to get caught up. We started off the week with “Dinner Discussions,” which helps keep us on track with our lessons. Then we had a review of Dallin H. Oaks’ conference talk on “Testimony.” Is your teen trying to decide whether or not to add seminary to his schedule? “Choose to Attend Seminary” will help him see that the blessings will be great if he’ll take that extra time to study the gospel more deeply. We continued … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review June 2nd-7th

Welcome to our Week in Review here in LDS. If you weren’t able to join us throughout the week, here is your chance to get caught up at a glance. We began the week with “Depression vs. Depression,” which talks about the differences in the two definitions of the word “depression” and how we can best support those who are dealing with the effects of the condition. Then we had a book review on “The Master Deceiver,” which talks about the importance of fortifying ourselves against the adversary. We kept on track with our “Dinner Discussions” for the week, and … Continue reading

General Conference: “The True and Living Church”

In his talk “The True and Living Church” President Henry B. Eyring speaks about how the church is true and it continues even after a prophet passes away. President Eyring points out the keys of the priesthood were restored to the earth by the Apostle Peter when he gave them Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith conferred those keys to the quorum of the Twelve, so the church continued after he died. President Eyring points out that it is important to live worthily so that the keys will continue to be on the earth. We truly sustain our leaders when we heed … Continue reading

New Church Website Focuses on Disabilities

LDS Week in Review – March 17th – 22nd

I hope you all had a great week – we sure did here in LDS. Here’s a quick recap of the blogs we brought you. We began our week with another installment in the Senior Missionary Series, this on “Talking with Your Bishop.” After you’ve made the decision to serve, you’ll meet with your bishop to discuss your plans with him and to be interviewed for worthiness to serve that mission. We then read about the Joseph Smith lesson in our 2008 manual on “Repentance.” “Incorporating Gospel Teaching into Daily Life” sympathizes with all us busy parents who struggle to … Continue reading
