Teenager's and Loud Music

As a parent my musical taste does not usually match that of my children.  I am not sure how many of you out there have ever had theme music to a children's television show or some version of "I'm a Little Tea Pot" running through your head from over exposure, but I have been there.  It was a phase.  My children out grew it, yours will too. The kids evolved to the latest pop sensation and then into a louder form of theme music.  They identify with this music- for whatever reason they feel it represents the person they are trying to define.  This is not a bad thing.  Part of the growing-up process is to try to figure out who you are.

The teen years are difficult.  Not many of us out there would want to redo them with out the insight they have now.  Truth-be-told being a teen is even harder now then it was when I was getting through it.  Home work, social pressure, societal pressure, parental pressure, all of it can make you want to scream! Back in my day your "bad hair day" was not in jeopardy of being released in a text message or as a web movie for general consumption.

So here is my theroy, and it has probably been said before by someone...

If you weigh your options- your teenager upstairs screaming about the unfairness of the world, or upstairs having their music scream for them. I would go for the music.  You can ask them to put on head phones or turn it down- but they still get the mood lift from letting out the pressure of their world. They still get to feel like there is a band out there screaming for them. They are not alone. They get to go and scream in a socially acceptable manor.  Last but not least remember- this is just like before and it doesn't last forever.  I am sure you have your moment when you want to scream too.
