The Medicaid Program in Maine Has Problems

The Medicaid program in Maine is full of difficulties. The state has a history of asking the federal government for waivers from certain portions of the Affordable Care Act, some of which result in changes to Medicaid. The Medicaid program in Maine is not as robust as the programs in other states, but it does still exist. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to cover individuals and families who are low income and who cannot afford to purchase a health plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by … Continue reading

A Fun Weekend In Maine

This weekend, I went to Maine with the boys and my husband’s parents. It has pretty much become an annual trip for us, and we go the same weekend every year so that we can go to the Common Ground Fair, which takes place in the town of Unity. The Common Ground Fair is a unique and special event that is focused on sustainability and environmental awareness. There are many educational opportunities for adults, and also many fun things for children of all ages. While we were at the fair, Dylan was able to try doing some new things. Maine Gets Waiver On Health Insurance Requirement

Recently, there was a law put into place that required all health insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money that they get from premiums on things that are actually beneficial to the health of their customers. However, the federal government has granted a waiver of this requirement for the entire state of Maine. Could this mean that other states could have the requirement waived, too? The United States Department of Health and Human Services created a requirement that applied to all companies that sell health insurance. They would have to spend a minimum of 80% of the … Continue reading

Now, the name Terry Hobbs might not be familiar to you, but if I were to say the stepfather of Steven Branch, one of the victims of the West Memphis Three murders, you might remember his name. The West Memphis Three was a horrific murder case that happened just across the Mississippi River in 1993 when I lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Three eight year old boys (Steven Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore) were found dead in a Robin Hood Hills drainage canal. I won’t … Continue reading

New Law Gives Maine Midwives Access to Medications

Midwives in Maine will have access to certain medications, thanks to a new law. The law allows pharmacists to give the drugs to certified professional midwives for use in home birth. The legislation will help midwives and their patients. The drugs included under the law are vitamin K injections used to help in blood clotting, antibiotic eye drops and medication to numb the skin for suturing tears after the baby is born. The first two medications are routinely used in hospital births, but often not used in home births. The state is hoping this will change after the law is … Continue reading
