Do you need to adjust it each time you put him in and take him out? For winter, I would suggest removing the seat from the vehicle, getting him in and fiddling with the fit on the straps, removing him, putting the seat back in the car and using that measurement until he grows again. It is a pain, but the good news is that if you have trouble sticking your hand in between the vehicle's seat and your son's car seat, then it must be in very securely. That's a good thing. They probably spend a ton of time riding. I'm surprised they don't fall asleep en route and miss their stop. I would never let my kid (even a 10-year-old) ride solo.
