This is a great article--makes me sad for the "temperature" I created for a bit earlier today. :-( Thanks for the wake-up call. We can all use a reminder now and then.

I LOVE the Creative Memories corner rounder. I've tried to do the same with my scissors with disasterous results.

AFP Tests - What do they mean? - Blog Entry

right-the AFP lets you know if you need to go for further testing; thus the phase 2 ultrasound. Usually you don't get one of these unless there is a possible problem.

In truth, I had the test not because of the risk of the LOW results, but because of the risk of the HIGH results. My best friend lost a baby due to anacephaly, which was detected with the HIGH results. I would never want to go through a pregnancy without knowing that my baby would not survive. If I could know, I would want to.

The test has a high false-positive rate when the numbers are LOW (indicative of Down Syndrome) BUT a very low false-positive rate when the numbers are HIGH (indicating spina bifida, acacephaly, etc.) I think the test is important. If you get a high result, often things can be done in utero to help the baby. Hard as it is though, it's every mother's decision....and not an easy one at that. If you do get a LOW false-positive, doctors often recommend an amnio, which my friend was told poses more risk of miscarriage than the possibility that your baby has Down Syndrome. Pregnancy is not easy. Neither is parenthood. Too bad we can't have crystal balls, huh?

We ALL do the best we can. Formula is not going to cause harm to your baby. I'm very frustrated when people push one form of feeding or the other as the "only" way. Mothers have enough pressure as it is without other mothers making them feel guilty. Do what's best for you, your home, your family, your baby. If you do that, then you're making the "right" choice.

Wish I Had More Time in the Day - Journal Entry

I hear ya, Libby. Gosh I wish I could be one of those people that can do it all consistently. But if I have a good writing day, then my house inevitably looks like we've been robbed because the kids demolish it. If I do all that I want with the kids, the house is still a mess (hehe) and my writing lags. If I clean the house (yick, yuck, ick, ach!) then everything else goes to heck. WHAT IS THE ANSWER???? If you find it, let me know because most of the time I think I'm running around like a headless chicken. :-) And giving up sleeping? Definitely a no. Sure wish I could give up eating though--my waist would love that! hehehehehehehehe

Way to go, Libby. I'd love to know if any of the companies you work for are hiring more home workers? I'm looking for more freelancing opps. I've done quite a bit of magazine and newspaper work. I was a substitute teacher for awhile for grades K-6, and I've worked for an educational company writing grade-leveled activity books. It's so hard to find contacts! I search Craig's List every day and a few other sites, but the good offers are few and far between!

Sounds like you're a GREAT mom. Your kids will know how lucky they are later in life when they're successful and well-rounded. Way to go, mommy! I agree with you wholeheartedly about wanting my kids to read. I was an avid reader growing up. Reading helped me realize I could do anything, including going to college when my family couldn't afford it and didn't know how to make it work. So keep on with what you're doing--sure wish more parents would. :-)
