What good movie taste you have! :) Hehe. I also adore You've Got Mail and anything with Hugh Grant or Meg Ryan.

Should You Join a Writer's Group?

14 Feb 2007 12:35 PM

I ran an online crique group for several years--it just recently fizzled out. It was the most valuable tool I had--without that group, I likely never would have learned what I needed to learn to get published--and now I have four books coming out in 2008. So yes, I'm a big advocate of writer's groups, especially for children's writers. Find a good group that offers you feedback on what doesn't work with your book but also on what does work. Honesty isn't always easy, but if your critiquers know their stuff, trust me, it's better to get the truth from them before you submit than to submit your work all over the place, not knowing that you've made glaring mistakes.

You're absolutely right though--it's a very personal decision. A good writing group can soar your career to new heights. A "bad" group can diminish your spirit. My advice--try one out. If it's a good fit, stick around. If not, find a new group.

Good blog!

Great article, Myra. Your story about my son and the superhero costume made me chuckle. I can easily see my son doing this. And you're right--there are so many other battles to fight--why fight the little and often insignifigant ones? Well said!

Oh no! This breaks my heart. Do you know what happened to the kids? Are they okay?
