This is not a quick fix for people who routinely live above their means. Should You Get A Home Equity Loan? - Blog Entry03 Oct 2008 10:52 AM Ruthann, I think in most cases it isn't a good idea to pay off credit card debt with a home equity loan, but I can think of some instances where it might be a good move. Obviously, you want to avoid continuing to use those credit cards. A family that has mounting interest on their debt may only have a choice between paying off that debt or declaring bankruptcy, for example. If they are committed to getting back on track, the home equity loan may be able to save them from having to sell. Or the family might have that credit card debt due to one-time medical costs that aren't likely to be repeated. Are Frugal People More Emotionally Mature? - Blog Entry03 Oct 2008 06:17 AM Samual, One thing I wanted to mention about being frugal, is that is is a requirement for some households. Some people who practice frugality do so in order to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. They work hard and contribute to society, but just can't make it any other ways. Others decide to reduce to one income and stay home with children. Still others, as Val mentioned, want to be good stewards of their resources. I also haven't met a frugal person yet who doesn't give to charities through money, food or volunteering. I wouldn't call these people cheap. The Danger of MegaSchools - Blog Entry03 Oct 2008 06:03 AM I have to disagree, obviously with both of you. Samual, University students have quite different needs than those of elementary students. A five-year-old requires more attention than a 18-year-old in terms of getting through the school day. The plan that our school is proposing comes out to an additional cost of $5 per year per taxpayer, hardly money saving. And in fact, that increase in taxes for building the mega school actually reduces the number of teachers and staff, so class sizes will now be larger (justified by larger physical classrooms to fit more students). as anyone can tell you, more students per teacher is not a good thing. So, in fact there is no money saved and put back into teaching. Why You Shouldn't Give Cough or Cold Medicine to Your Baby - Blog Entry03 Oct 2008 05:56 AM As a parent, I always double check whatever goes into my child, as much as I can control it. I have never used cold medicines on my children, although I have and will use Tylenol for a fever reducer. I remember back when my second child was an infant. I called in to find out the proper dosage for infant Tylenol for her age and weight. I wanted to make sure I got it right. The scary thing is that the nurse gave me the dosage for Children's Tylenol not Infants Tylenol by mistake. As parents will remember, the infant stuff is more concentrated. It seemed too much to me, so I called a second doctor's office. Had I followed the nurse's advice, there is a good chance that I wouldn't have my daughter today! Double check everything and do your research. Stretch Out Your Kids Clothing - Blog Entry01 Oct 2008 02:56 PM Wow, those are great tips! Little boy shorts look long anyway, so this will fit right in with current trends! Thanks.
