While's I've always had a cat, and once even a dog, I have to give a special shout out for a childhood pet: a goldfish named Guido. Gudio survived a stint at an Italian feast where golf balls were thrown at his head, a life of living on the stove top in a small kitchen (where the burner would go on right next to him) and numerous near-escapes and subsequent rescues from the sink drain, when my mother cleaned his bowl.

I think it must be so tough when you are actually in that situation to be able to see those type of warning bells. All that you know is that you are on an emotional roller coaster. Distance can often help with that, too.
