Watch Out for the “Up to” Sales

“All Toys on Sale up to 50 percent off!” “Save up to 70 percent off on all clearance sweaters!” “Going Out of Business! All books are up to 90 percent off!” These are some of the most recent sale signs that I have seen on store windows this holiday season. Are the desperate retail stores trying to unload as much as they can before Christmas, giving you the rock bottom deals while they still can? Well, yes and no. There is truth in advertising and then there is truth in advertising. The “up to” sales work well for the stores. … Continue reading

Adventures of a Beginning Couponer Part 1

Earlier this week, I watched Extreme Couponing for the first time. I knew that people were saving big using coupons, but I had no idea that they were walking away with carts and carts of merchandise for free, or even getting all of their items for free and then getting money back from the store. Of course there were things that I noticed about the show that helped me to understand that there are drawbacks to the whole coupon thing, such as the types of foods and items that a person can find coupons for and the time that extreme … Continue reading

Disney a Most Trusted Company

Last week I mentioned that Forbes Magazine named the Walt Disney Corporation as the world’s third most trusted company. I promised I’d elucidate the idea further. The parameters of the study, which was actually carried out by the Reputation Institute (a company which “helps corporate clients manage their images”), declared these companies the ones that “consumers like, trust, and respect the most.” Disney, following Google and Sony, earned a global reputation score of 77.97. Unfortunately the study doesn’t specify what that’s out of; I’m assuming out of 100 but list topper Google only ranked a 78.62 so it might be … Continue reading

Will High School Musical Continue?

Parents, you might need to console your tweens and teens: it’s a bittersweet day for fans of Disney’s mammoth “High School Musical” franchise. After two Disney Channel movies, one silver screen flick, and countless albums, merchandise, theater and international spin-offs, the era of the Wildcats as we know it is over. But the story isn’t entirely finished, thus the silver lining to the cloud. Ashley Tisdale, who played the drama queen antagonist of the series, signed on to star in the spin-off tv movie “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.” The movie starts filming this summer for a 2011 release on the Disney … Continue reading

Thanks to Winn-Dixie for Supporting Breast Cancer Research

I usually blog about deals, coupons, sales, and matching up coupons and rebates to stores. Today I want to tell you about Winn-Dixie – not about the money I saved shopping there but about the lives they helped to save by being a sponsor of the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer in Jacksonville, Florida. Winn-Dixie, along with several other companies, was a sponsor of this event. At the expo before the run, they sent representatives from their pharmacy to check blood pressure and body mass index (BMI). I don’t know what they donated financially as a sponsor, but I … Continue reading

On this day after Halloween, most department and discount stores are busy putting out their Christmas merchandise, so it stands to reason that the travel industry would follow suit by advertising their top picks for holiday getaways. Be Glad You Aren’t These Parents

What would you do if you learned that your 11-year-old son had been suspended from school? Would you: A. Ground him for life B. Ship him off to military school C. Punch his principal for what you consider to be an unfair punishment If you answered “C,” then you might want to reconsider after hearing what happened to a Rhode Island mom after she went the same route. According to reports, 30-year-old Aleyda Uceta allegedly punched and bit her son’s school principal after she was told the boy was being suspended. No kidding. Police say Uceta attacked the principal of … Continue reading

Maui Wowie Travel Deals

I grew up in Hawaii, but even I still have yet to visit all of the Valley Isle’s world-class attractions. Maui may not be the largest island in the state, but it certainly has a lot to offer. If you have always dreamed of taking a tropical vacation in paradise, but didn’t have the means to fund a trip, now might be your lucky break. The Kapalua Villas just unveiled six new travel packages for those planning to visit Maui between April 1 and December 19th. Each specially-themed package offers savings of at least 40% off rack rates. Take a … Continue reading

Year End Savings in January

Many people think once the year is over, and December is gone that the sales and savings stop. This is simply not true. Most stores are in a massive inventory reduction mode to get rid of all the old product. This is not exclusive to discount chains. Most stores in the mall, and retail chains are also getting rid of their 2007 merchandise. The New Year brings new orders, new inventory and a major store clearance event. It doesn’t take much to find them either. Often you will see a huge red or yellow banner hanging on the outside of … Continue reading

Sales Takes a Certain Personality

This week I attended a home party thrown by one of my friends. About ten women showed up, smiling and laughing, enjoying the wine and cookies while browsing the items on display. The sales lady had apparently been with the company for quite some time, and she worked for not only that home party business but another one as well. Let me preface this by saying that I’ve never been a saleswoman, nor felt comfortable when I had to sell items. I can recall being hired by Service Merchandise years ago to work at the jewelry counter. I went out … Continue reading
