Serious Santa Shortage - Blog Entry

07 Dec 2007 10:17 AM

The people in the mall are not the real santa. Just his helpers.

The real Santa just did a breakfast with Santa in Montvale NJ last week. Everyone has a nice breakfast of donuts, bagels, coffee, cereal, juice, and they get candy canes too. And Santa walks around and jingles his bells and softly asks children if they are ready to come and sit with him and tell him what they want. Ho Ho Ho.

Pictures are available.

If you don't want to tell santa, thats ok. you can write him a letter. You can talk to him on the way out. And if mom buys a glossy 8x10 of Santa from the fundraiser lady for $10, instead of a picture, Santa will autograph it for the child - right in front of them - with SILVER ink.

I have a feeling that in Anchorage, Santa is probably showing up a lot at fraternal organizations, neighborhood groups, chambers of commerce, and childrens organizations. Not as easy to find as the mall santa, but if you look hard enough, you will find him.

Celebrating My One Year Anniversary as a Pets Blogger - Blog Entry

05 Dec 2007 10:24 AM

Two years of blogging! Wow, where did the time go??? Families.com was two years old this past summer. Lisa and I celebrated the second anniversary of our membership on this site in October.

Catzilla and I want to thank Courtney and Aimee for all the wonderful information and advice they have given animal lovers. I have learned more about different animals, including monkeys, than I ever thought possible. Also, these blogs are great to consult when you are considering adopting or purchasing a new kind of pet.

Tips for Traveling with Cats - Blog Entry

When I move, I have a carrier that fits a small dog, and am putting his favorite sleeping bag in there. The drive is about 20 hours, so we will stop overnight at a hotel (that takes pets).

Not looking forward to this with him. He will be medicated.

How often do you have to offer cats the litter box? If I open the car door with him uncontained, he will bolt - so he will have to use the box in the car.

Family Counseling-Cooperating with the Ex - Blog Entry

28 Nov 2007 03:24 PM

These are good suggestions, but when the other parent is determined to use the counseling against you, tries to intimidate the therapist, tries to hire a "second opinion" which is really an expert witness who will shoot holes in everything, then "cooperation" is meaningless and actually harmful.

Frankly, if people can get along so well as to make any of this work, I wonder why they bother getting divorced. Having survived four years of custody litigation and protected my kids from my ex husband's boyfriend, it looks like a much more perfect world to me.

"Hey Mom, I LIKE Gifted School!" - Blog Entry

One of the interesting things about gifted kids is that they need the company of their peers, other gifted students. While this flies in the face of conventional wisdom of mainstreaming, it's a critical need that is often overlooked.

When Kids Feel They Have to Choose for the Holidays - Blog Entry

20 Nov 2007 08:30 PM

We can't avoid the choice thing. I am so holidayish and my ex is a real grinch. So the kids for years were in a codependent thing of making him TRY to have a good Christmas. Now they are pretty much out of it.

For years they were forced to go along with the so called schedule. It divided Christmas day right in half. Then my oldest decided he'd rather spend Christmas cooking at the homeless shelter. Something HE wanted to do. My ex actually took us to court to force him to stop, since I was obviously encouraging him to be so difficult. The judge said she heard that the shelters are just lovely this time of year, and refused to forbid a 15 year old kid to volunteer.

After the first year, I volunteered when my kid did, whether it was my "turn" or not. My ex never did.

Now we pretty much do what we want. If they want to do something with him, great. All I ask is that they tell me.

Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Involvement? Part 3 - Blog Entry

20 Nov 2007 05:35 PM

Actually Val, I'm surprised that someone who appears to be opposed to home schooling would want to see government involved. After all, homeschoolers are supposed to receive benefits from state and local school districts that are available to all children - but public schools are often pretty stingy with these. Seems to me that if someone wants to encourage certified teachers to supervise you, they should encourage certified teachers, school boards, superintendents, etc to treat you as they would any other parent in the community.

Oh, wait. That IS how they treat parents. Especially those pesky involved ones. At least in my experience.
