Runners vs. Drivers-Sharing the Road with Lunatics on Four Wheels - Blog Entry

05 Dec 2008 03:50 AM

I run on a roadside - sidewalks are here and there along the path. During the day, if I run on the sidewalk I have to get off to go around dog walkers and children. The roadside where I am is wide, and so we are courteous with walkers and bikers and they are courteous as well. At night, it is easier to see the roadside than the sidewalk, where I could trip, and where I have fallen before.

We carefully plan runs here - it is very dark at night and a couple was killed.

Not surprised about NJ - that's the general level of rage on the road there, daily. My son used to run there, still does sometimes. You really have to plan it out, but there are all sorts of nuts.

Car Pet Restraints - Blog Entry

Catzilla had his choice of a small or large carrier when we moved. I also made him wear a leash for the whole trip - if he bolted on a litter break, I wanted to have something to grab onto. I also seat belted the carriers into the car. His idea of showing displeasure was to howl and rock the carrier. There is a crack now in the top of the small one.

The door on the large one was loose, and he shook it so he got out, and I was glad he was wearing a leash, because when he decided to scale the windows and then jump onto the dashboard I had something to grab onto and pull before he took the wheel. 15 pounds of him jumping on the dashboard and aiming to spring at me. I think he wanted me to stop the car in no uncertain terms. Trouble was, we were on I65 southbound in the left lane.

By the way, he was on medication. He was supposed to be a happy kitty.

I have to get a new carrier for him - something in between sizes that isn't so easy to spring by rocking. The next time he goes any long distance with me in the car will be for hurricane evacuation, which I hope is never.

There was a big fuss after the democratic fracas of the late 60s and the constitutional crisis in a Republican presidency in the 70s about each party's "platform". Abortion was a huge plank in the platform. And all the good candidates are supposed to support the party and the platform on which it is built. Abortion seems to be the one issue where you are not allowed to be a moderate or dissent from the "platform" if you want the support of the party. Seems like they can dissent on just about anything else. Oh, and gun control too. That seems to be a biggie.

I think this is about party politics, and how the power bases are constructed more than the actual issue.

My kids are Christians, albeit more liberal than I am. They voted like me - Obama, and then the straight republican ticket. The one who is still voting in NJ was not wild about the local republicans, but was voting out the crooks.

It appears that Al Quaeda has set their sites on Pakistan, and will try to bring down the new government there. It ain't over.
