Freecycle Giving Tips - Blog Entry

There's a psychology of buying at work here. I worked in a community center in a poor neighborhood. The agency had enough to provide a free lunch, but the director was smart enough to know that people value things more when they have to pay for them, so the lunch cost $2.50. There's something to this. If it's free, nothing personal has happened, no exchange of value, so a free thing isn't worth as much dignity than an inexpensive thing. So sell the couch for $10-$20 instead of giving it away. People will have invested something of themselves in it and will value it more. This is true.

Say Goodbye to the Single Socks - Blog Entry

I have solved the single-sock problem! What you need to do from now on is purchase all your socks in the same color. You could color code your socks: all blue for George, all pink for Lizbeth, all yellow for Tyler, all black for Dad, all white for Mom. All the socks match all the other socks in the same color, so even if one goes to sock heaven, everything else matches. This actually works. Sockily yours, Memartha

We've tried a lot of different dog foods for the dog, but she always runs across the kitchen to the cats' dishes for her favorite: Purina One Hairball Remedy for Cats. Go figure.

The Curious Case of the Cat in the Shower - Blog Entry

My dog loves the bathroom. She comes in every chance she gets. And why? Because when we're on the loo, we're a captive audience. She comes for love, those head scritches. Silly girl.

How Television is Costing You Money - Blog Entry

In my part of the country, February and March are demons. The snow, the cold, the social isolation. On my street you can go days without seeing another human being. That's when I need a television -- for connection with the world, for frugal entertainment, for something to do when you run out of enthusiasm for cleaning your baseboards. The rest of the year, television regains normal status. Take it or leave it.

Five Ways Craigslist is Very Frugal - Blog Entry

You can use Craigslist to hire people, too. During the winter, a long branch from our maple tree came down. It was too big to lift (75lbs) with but the professionals wanted $300. I placed an ad on Craigslist for someone to "get rid of this stupid branch for $20." There were over 15 responses. We hired Jimmy who lived nearby. He got some cash, we got rid of the branch. Win-win.

Letting the Holidays Drag You Down - Blog Entry

One problem is that one loses focus. Not willpower, exactly, but a steady awareness of what you are trying to do. At least, that's how it is with me. I lost 75 pounds 2 years ago by completely changing my relationship to food. Of course, I've gained 50 back -- because I've lost focus. Food is wonderful. Holiday food is wonderfuller. Yes, it is, but that seductive little comfort you get when you eat it adds up and up and up. I tell myself: You just have to maintain that focus, and not give in. Wish me luck --and discipline -- as I get those blasted 50 pounds back off -- again. Sheesh!

Favorite Cookbooks - Blog Entry

The College Survival Cookbook was written by two moms for their freshmen children. While some methodology is primitive (set out your ingredients), the recipes are great. Especially the McCrystal's Survival Casserole, a splendid hamburger/macaroni/tomato/cheese dish that is now a family favorite. Thanks, Moms!
