Pork roasts are transformed into a food of the Gods. Yum! Affording Toys for the Holidays - Blog Entry29 Oct 2009 03:30 PM In my part of the country, Pittsburgh PA, The Salvation Army offers a free toy program for qualified parents, the working poor, and those at or below the poverty level. You might want to call your local Salvation Army to see if they are doing the same. Here, parents register their children and they are placed on an "Angel Tree" for people to purchase age-appropriate toys. They are distributed the week before Christmas. How to Find Money - Blog Entry07 Oct 2009 02:31 PM Yes! One day, bills due, spirits low, I walked down an alley and found $400 in cash! No identification anywhere. Another day, I found a wallet with $350 in it, and got the biggest thrill in mailing it back to the owner, every cent intact. Greening an Older or Historic Home - Blog Entry21 Sep 2009 02:25 PM My house was built in 1875, solid brick and plaster. If the windows are covered with plastic in the winter, we can live at 60-degrees in the daytime. In summer, we're 10-15-degrees cooler than outside. This is so cool. (Or warm.) Overcoming Weight Loss Obstacles - Blog Entry17 Aug 2009 02:22 PM Go, Mary Ann, go! Rest, Mary Ann, rest! Meals to Make When You Have No Money for Groceries - Blog Entry13 Aug 2009 03:48 AM Homeless folk lead itinerant lives. They must always pick up and go to another place. What is sorely needed is new, sturdy, warm clothes. We get lots of scarves and hats, but coats and sweaters are in short supply. Large sizes. That All Important Meal - Blog Entry11 Aug 2009 02:21 PM Breakfast just makes sense. If you eat dinner at 6-7-8, and skip breakfast, that makes 16+ hours without food till lunch. Talk about depletion! While I don't always get breakfast, the days run better when I do slow down for my bowl of yummy oatmeal ... with butter, brown sugar and, yes, admit it, real cream! Sometimes breakfast lasts all the way till supper. No midday rumblies in the tumblies. Meals to Make When You Have No Money for Groceries - Blog Entry06 Aug 2009 02:17 PM Jim, a friend, manages a food bank at a local church, a church that is deeply involved with inner city homelessness work. It has a soup kitchen, a food pantry, social workers. At key "significant" times of year -- Thanksgiving, Christmas -- donations are abundant. And, to tell the truth, a little silly. Thanksgiving brings so many, many pies that clients at the soup kitchen get 5-6 slices. Christmas is stocking stuffers for the homeless men: toiletries, cheese crackers. Jim said it best, though: All this on holidays is good, but what about August 12th? The homelessness/hunger problem is 24/7/365. True, about half of them bring it on themselves through irresponsibility or drug/alcohol problems. But the other half are people just falling through the cracks. Lots of psychotics, deserted mothers of young children in shelters, and on and on. It's no disappointment to miss out on the extras of Thanksgiving and Christmas that most of us take for granted. It's "where do we sleep tonight?" "Where is our next meal?" Yes, pie is nice. |
