Five Ways to Focus on the True Meaning of Christmas - Blog Entry

09 Dec 2006 07:41 PM

Thanks. Growing up my family always had the Nativity, and did the twelve days for someone. When I was in high school we started caroling on Christmas at a hospital. My mom is a nurse and works in Rehab wards, where not everyone gets to go home. It was nice to take Christmas to some people who couldn't go home for the day.

What I've Learned About Money and How I Learned It - Blog Entry

05 Dec 2006 01:05 PM

I know I am lucky. I really feel blessed to have had the job at the bank. It was there that I really began to see firsthand the effects of overspending and poor money management. It really opened my eyes and influenced the choices that I have made my whole life. I have not always been the perfect saver or budgeter, but these lessons have helped me and my family. My husband's parents are also excellent examples of how to manage money. It is great that he is so supportive of my desire to budget and to save and spend wisely.

Long-distance relationships do have benefits. But I do miss having my family close to me. I am just too independent and stubborn to make living at home for a time work for me. But I know a lot of people who have done it successfully. It is a decision that each family needs to make for themselves.

Is Student Loan Debt a Necessary Evil? - Blog Entry

I agree that the market seems to be leaning towards getting a Master's degree. I plan on getting one, once my kids are all in elementary school. I went to a private school, but the tuition was comparable to state school tuition. I do think that a school's reputation is important, but that a lot of state schools have good reps. For example here in NC, UNC is a great school. You get the discount on tuition, compared to private schools, and a great education. However there are a few private schools around here, where I wouldn't want to pay the private tuition, because I am not impressed with their reputations. It is a give and take situation. If you can afford the private school tuition or going into a job that will make repaying the debt a lot easier, private schools are an option. But state schools can offer a high quality education at a much lower price.

Do You Have Extra Paychecks? - Blog Entry

The trick to making your extra paycheck work is to plan your monthly budget on two paychecks. You might not get the extra money for a month or two after that extra pay period in the month--it takes awhile to catch up with itself. When my dh was paid weekly we did this with his fifth paychecks. It was a nice easy way to save.

Personally, I don't think I could ever move in with my parents or in-laws. I only moved home for one summer once I started college and I swore never again. I get along well with my in-laws, but I am too independent and set in my ways. I know that I would end up being angry or stupid somehow.

Are you a Mary or a Martha? - Blog Entry

I agree that it is hard to find the balance, but there are times when I step back and think, "Wait--this isn't what I really want to be focusing on." It is a constant balancing act.
