Once you have covered most of the major food groups you will want to make sure that you include additional items in your food storage to round out the basics. You should plan to store enough to last you for a year. Most of these items are fairly easy to rotate throughout the year. 1) You will want to make sure that you include powdered milk in your food storage. You can use powdered milk in baking and cooking recipes. It can add nutrients to the foods you already make. If you do not plan on drinking powdered milk, you … Continue reading

Land of the Confiscated Items

In previous blogs I’ve written about where lost pieces of airline luggage go when they are separated (sometimes permanently) from their owners. But, have you ever wondered where all those prohibited carry-on items go to rest after airport security screeners confiscate them? Would you believe New Hampshire? A good portion of the “suspicious items” collected at New England airports get sent to a warehouse in New Hampshire. Everything from baseball bats, screwdrivers and wrenches to rocks, razor blades and pocketknives. More than two tons of abandoned items have been collected in the last 10 months. According to the Transportation Security … Continue reading

Finacial Pitfalls: The Miscellaneous Category

One area that many people have a difficult time with is the miscellaneous category. This is a category where you tend to put in unexpected expenses. It can be difficult because you may be putting things in this category that do not really belong there. There are several expenses that you should not be putting into the miscellaneous category. Eating out is a common expense that is not planned for and then shuffled into the miscellaneous category. Other entertainment expenses, such as movie tickets, also get put into the miscellaneous category. These optional expenses should be planned for with a … Continue reading

Dealing with Taxes When You Work from Home

I always say it takes a disciplined person to work from home. But that applies not only to the work; it also applies to setting aside taxes. I am an independent contractor for a web content company; therefore, my taxes are not automatically taken out from my paycheck. If I’m not disciplined to take out the money, I can easily find myself in a deep hole. Now there is a difference between someone who is self-employed and an independent contractor. The IRS can help you determine which one you fall under. This year I did a little better job with … Continue reading

Taking Inventory Of The Freezer

This weekend I cleaned out the refrigerator, nothing earth shattering about that except that it was way over due. Once I was finished with the fridge I moved on to the freezer. There was a lot of unidentifiable stuff in there that I had to throw out. As I was cleaning out the freezer I thought about all the money I’m throwing away because I never know what I have. I go to the grocery store, fill the fridge and the freezer, the overflow goes into the freezer in the basement where I promptly forget about it. I find myself … Continue reading

Planning a Baby Shower Part V

Today is the day of the baby shower for my thirty three weeks pregnant sister. The preparations for this baby shower have been ongoing for the past several months. Things really were put into high gear about three weeks ago with the writing and sending of the baby shower invitations. The planning continued yesterday as I made six dozen cupcakes, got together all my supplies for the baby shower games and items needed for preparing and frosting the six dozen cupcakes, I picked up the flowers for both the door prizes and cupcake decoration, and many other miscellaneous items (like … Continue reading
