Does School Start Too Early?

26 Dec 2006 05:33 PM

I'd LOVE for my school to start at 8 or 8:30. We start at 7:20, which means I have to be there by 6:50! I'm not sure that starting much later than 8:30 is a good idea though, due to the extra-curricular activities that kids participate in. They already miss enough school, and get back pretty late (10 or 11 at night). If we push back school starting time, then either the kids miss even more school, or they get back even later...maybe okay for their sleep cycle, but probably not okay for mom and dad who DO have to get up and work in the morning. Highschool is about preparing kids to survive on their own, and that includes getting up in time to get to your job...which for many people will not start as late as 10 or 11 in the morning. But please give me that 8-8:30 start time! I'll take it!!! ;)

Are Teachers Over Paid?

25 Oct 2006 07:18 PM

Maybe I ought to move to Chicago. Here in California, I make $41,000 a year, pay $400 a month for Health coverage. Teachers at the top make around $70,000. Maybe it sounds like a lot to some people, but I can't even qualify for a shack to live in. A small 1-2 bedroom fixer-upper runs $300,000. A decent 3 bedroom, 2 bath house is $400,000 on up. I have a Bachelors degree plus another year for the extra credentialing California requires. I'd love to get my masters, but due to all of the extra work I have to do (its a myth that we get summers off, with all of the extra prep and conferences we have to go to) I have neither the time nor the money. I leave the house at 6:15 am and don't get home until 3:30 or 4:00...and then its only because I brought work home with me. I usually put in another 3 to 4 hours at home. I get 33 minutes for lunch, if I tell my students I can't meet with them. I'm in one of the higher paying districts in the area. I know this is an old blog, but I followed a link here, and I just had to say something! :)

How to Handle Change, and, WELCOME SnugglePie.

I've done so many forums etc, I can handle those kinds of changes...its the feelings of "acceptance" or lack thereof that get me. Thank you so much for a wonderful blog entry...I think it will help put things into perspective. :D
