If We Want Our Children to Have Character Traits, We Need to Have Them First - Blog Entry

29 Jun 2007 04:53 AM

I don't agree with the idea that we cannot teach our children traits that we have not learned ourselves. I did not begin to learn confidence or assertiveness until I began to teach those traits to my daughter. All I needed was to know what the desirable traits (in this case, confidence and assertiveness) look like, as well as what the undesirable traits look like. I didn't know what they felt like, but encouraging them only requires knowing what they look like. From there, it was pretty much impossible not to start developing those myself. We both won. Wouldn't have happened if I'd thought I couldn't teach it without having it myself.

New Hope For Needlephobics - Blog Entry

They have a hard time finding veins in me, too. I've found that if they put the IV in the back of my hand, it's no problem at all. As an added bonus, it doesn't interfere with my ability to move and bend my arm as much as if it's in my elbow.

It's "That Time of the Month" to Save Money - Blog Entry

Several years ago I bought a "Diva Cup". It's sort of a latex cup used in place of a tampon (I can't use pads). I absolutely love it and will never go back to disposable products. I take it out and empty it couple of times a day. If I'm at home, I rinse it out in the sink, and if I'm in a public restroom, I grab a paper towel on my way in and wipe it out. I do still use disposable panty liners, just in case of overflow. Still, that $5 purchase has very likely saved me hundreds.

A Question A Week: Choosing Between Internet Explorer and Firefox - Blog Entry

I have been using firefox at home for some time now, but I use IE at work. I'm really spoiled by my plugins, so adjusting to non-tabbed browsing five days a week is a minor hassle.

Getting Teenagers to Wear Sunscreen - Blog Entry

I'm like you, I burn very easily. I started keeping a keyring bottle of sunscreen attached to my purse after I got a slight burn from driving around town looking for a job. I figured out that, just because I don't intend to be out in the sun for any length of time, doesn't mean I won't be. I don't use it most days, because I'm not an outdoorsy person, but I'm always glad to have it nearby if I am.

To Bribe or Not to Bribe - Blog Entry

29 Mar 2007 04:22 AM

My mom bribed me for good grades. I got a nickel for every paper I brought home with an A (or a star or whatever, I was about second grade or so). I don't know if I needed the extra motivation or not, but my grades were always excellent. I rarely got anything lower than a B, and I went on to graduate from college with a 3.8 GPA. I would have had a 4.0, except my first year I was in an abusive marriage and he did everything he could to sabatoge me, but that's the topic of a whole different story.

When Size Affects Income - Blog Entry

I have always had exactly the same problem. I eat what I want I'm hungry, and stop when I'm satisfied. I've never been able to figure out how anyone can continue to eat when they are no longer actually hungry, overeating makes me nauseous. My stepmother (a very heavy woman) went so far as to convince my dad to have me put in a psychiatric hospital for anorexia when I was 15.
