Taming the Freezer Monster

I have a monstrous amount of food in my freezer, and I think it’s alive. It’s a little sticky, and it’s got some nasty hard edges. Yesterday when I went down there to dig up some strawberries and cherries from the depths, it leapt onto my hand. I am sure it was trying to suck me in. I have a freezer packed full of fruit, jam, and other goodies from the rest of the growing season. This is wonderful. However, I must admit that it’s really quite hard to delve into the depths of the freezer and come out intact. … Continue reading

What Is the Disney Mom’s Panel?

Over my past 2.5 years as a Disney blogger I’ve frequently seen reference to the Disney Moms Panel. Each time I learned about it I was in the middle of researching for a different article, so even though I always meant to visit it someday it took me a long time to actually get around to it. But finally I’m here to answer: what is the Moms Panel? Just going by name alone I imagine the Moms Panel as a group of Disney-loving mothers ready to answer questions, likely posed by other moms, or at least parents, about Walt Disney … Continue reading

Make Mine a Mini

When you are looking for a quick and easy scrapbook gift to give a loved one, why not make it a mini. Don’t let their small size fool you; mini memory albums can be just as pretty or provocative as their full-sized counterparts, though they don’t take near as much time or money to create. My first foray into mini scrapbooking came when I inherited a detailed kit from a fellow scrapper who was cleaning out her craft closet. You can purchase the pre-packaged kits from scrapbook supply shops or craft stores, such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels. My kit … Continue reading

Snapping the Fish

Now that my daughter is more fish than kid, I’m thinking of investing in a camera that will allow me to snap shots underwater. Since neither of my parents swim there is little chance that they will ever get to see their one and only granddaughter navigate below the surface of the water. By purchasing a waterproof camera I can document life under the sea, so they can see the fun my daughter has flipping and twirling in the deep. Waterproof cameras come in a variety of shapes, sizes and price points. If you are planning to take just a … Continue reading

Conservation at the Animal Kingdom

One of the Animal Kingdom’s bats For all my from-childhood into-adulthood love of the fantasy worlds of Disney, the Animal Kingdom is rapidly becoming my favorite Disney World park. I know I haven’t actually visited Disney World yet, but just based on the things I’m learning about the Animal Kingdom’s dedication to conversation, the environmental and animal activist in me joins with my love of Disney to make me a huge fan of the Animal Kingdom. Recently the official Disney parks blog posted a round-up of all the ways the Animal Kingdom has in the past year promoted conservation, education, … Continue reading

Experimenting with Different Modes

Last month, I did the unthinkable. I actually woke my child from a deep slumber in order to drive to a football field in the middle of the boonies so we could witness a mass ascension of nearly three dozen hot air balloons. Turns out it was a highlight of our summer. Getting to see the massive balloons up close was an amazing experience that was dwarfed by the phenomenal view of them ascending into the cloudless summer sky in unison. The downside to the entire trip was the fact that I neglected to use the landscape mode on my … Continue reading

Visiting a Dirty Museum

Bring along extra Wet-Ones if you are planning a trip to the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. this summer. Forget about what your mom said about not playing in dirt, the Smithsonian Institution is taking soil to new depths. In its new exhibit–“Dig It”—-the museum is giving guests the chance to explore the mysterious and complex world of dirt. Curators say their goal with the new exhibit is to get people to see how soil is the foundation of all the Earth’s ecosystems, and that it is “as important as air and water.” Some of the exhibit’s … Continue reading

Middle School Homeschool Basics: Science

Middle school science is repetitive and repeats subjects learned during the elementary years. Instead of repeating the same subjects over and over, I feel that homeschoolers should look for experiences that will help the children learn the subject in a hands-on way and in greater depth. Look for experiments, museum and zoo trips, educational movies and things of that nature. With that said, the subjects they should learn are: Learning to classify and discover through science: Students must learn to classify living things, they must learn scientific classification, and must also learn scientific method, scientific nomenclature, and scientific measurement. Laboratory … Continue reading

Tips for Taking Great eBay Photos—FOCUS

You’ve got the perfect camera now it’s time to point, shoot and get those pictures posted on eBay. After all, if you want to sell your Internet auction items for as much as possible you need to snap to it… and remember to focus. In my previous blog I mentioned the importance of investing in a sound tripod and making sure your pictures are clutter-free. Now, we’re moving on to some solid photography lessons—namely focusing. How many times have you seen fuzzy pictures on eBay? I’m sure the blurred shots didn’t prompt you to place a bid on the item, … Continue reading
