Because nobody ever explained to me what the disease was and how you got it, I developed a very irrational fear of it. And I remember more than once being in such a panic that I would wake up my mom in the middle of the night to sit with me! It took me a long time to even be brave enough to mention my fears to my family. Once the facts were explained, I didn't have to be awake and afraid all the time, like AIDS was going to climb in my window and get me! So regardless of age, children may have already heard the "scary" names somewhere and wondered if they were going to get it! Up in Vermont, the plows were out and working as soon as the first flakes fell... around NJ it seems like they wait to get started until AFTER the storm has passed. Then again, my brother lived in North Carolina for a few years and they had a freak storm and NOBODY knew what to do! They ended up having tractors out trying to plow the roads!
