Oh Say Can You Sing? - Blog Entry

29 Mar 2006 02:39 PM

It is a VERY hard song to sing -- between the words and the range of the notes. I've sung it a few times for minor league baseball games and local fundraisers... and I always fear that I'll forget the words. (I was SURE I'd forgotten a part of the song the first time I sang it at the baseball stadium, because it was over so quickly, but my family assured me that I had remembered them all.)

As for where I learned it... my first grade teacher was very big on teaching us the patriotic songs -- besides the National Anthem, we learned "My Country Tis of Thee" and "America the Beautiful" and maybe some others.

Bathroom Matters - Blog Entry

Ah, the memories - upon my first ever visit into a men's bathroom, I was VERY jealous that the boys got a "special sink" (aka the urinal!) and the girls didn't. Thank goodness I didn't try washing up in that special sink!!

Matisyahu: A New Kind of Reggae - Blog Entry

27 Mar 2006 03:58 PM

I *love* Matisyahu! He's been getting quite a bit of attention on alternative radio stations lately -- I used to work for a station that played Matisyahu, and the listeners LOVED his stuff -- he sold out several concerts in the area! I can highly reccommend his "Live at Stubbs" album. (He was just featured in the music magazine BLENDER last month, too! It's Matis-mania!)

Thank you, Nicole! I'm hoping to help out the next time a transport comes through central New Jersey. (And all my fur-babies have been rescues, too. There are too many great dogs out there who are sitting in a shelter, waiting.)

Does My Five-Year-Old Really Need to Know about HIV - Blog Entry

20 Mar 2006 03:32 PM

Funny you should bring this up - when I was first hearing about HIV and AIDS on the news, I was young - under 10. Because nobody ever explained to me what the disease was and how you got it, I developed a very irrational fear of it. And I remember more than once being in such a panic that I would wake up my mom in the middle of the night to sit with me! It took me a long time to even be brave enough to mention my fears to my family. Once the facts were explained, I didn't have to be awake and afraid all the time, like AIDS was going to climb in my window and get me! So regardless of age, children may have already heard the "scary" names somewhere and wondered if they were going to get it!
