I had the opposite experience on a recent business trip. The hotel I was staying at assigned me a smoking room and was unable to fulfill my request for a non-smoking room! (There were some big conventions in town the same week I was, and they were booked, which I can understand.) They did run some sort of ozone machine to clean the air, which I much appreciated, being highly allergic to cigarette smoke! I agree that in your cases, a doctor's visit is probably in order. It just goes to show that every case (and every child!) is different!
