Gay Parents: Less Than Optimal?

15 Feb 2006 04:47 PM

I think that these days it's rare to see any family in the "optimal" situation -- isn't it something like 1 in 3 marriages ending in divorce these days?

To me, the important thing is having a child in a LOVING household, regardless of whether it is a single parent family, a hetero or homosexual couple, or whatever.

Length of relationship and gender of members doesn't necessarily equal Good Family -- my father's parents were married for more than 50 years and my grandfather was an abusive (physically and verbally) alchoholic. It has negatively affected my father and his relationship with me and my brother.

Physical ability to have children (man + woman) does not necessarily make you a better parent. It doesn't automatically make that couple the best thing for raising a child. But unfortunately it's going to be a long time before society is as accepting of that as I am. I'm with you, Nicki, instead of trying to force everyone to fit the "ideal", I think society needs to change. Because the ideal is very rare these days!

And, as a friend of mine said, apparently Ohio would rather see children in orphanages than in non-traditional families. Way to go, Ohio. Glad I don't live there.

Make Arms Stronger

We call them "pizza dough" arms in my family! :)

Single's Awareness Day

14 Feb 2006 05:46 PM

You know, I spent every V-Day feeling sorry for myself until I decided to be my own valentine! I get dressed up on V-Day and take myself shopping and splurge on something I normally wouldn't buy.

Honors Classes - Worth the Work!

14 Feb 2006 05:37 PM

I took AP (advanced placement) English my senior year and I will NEVER regret it! Our teacher was so tough and demanding, and I really had to work hard on my writing skills to keep my grades up. I owe a lot of my writing ability today to Ms. King -- thank you, where ever you are! :)

Working From Home - Looking Before You Leap

14 Feb 2006 01:21 AM

This is a great wake up call, Rachel! It might be helpful for potential work-at-home folks to TRY their potential job part time, at night and over the weekend, and see how well they do. (That's what I'm doing right now with my freelance writing; for a while, it wasn't much but lately I spend 3-4 hours every day writing! So that building-up period came while I was also working full time.)

Homemade Cat Toy

So cute! (And great pics, too!)

The pom-poms remind me of the "warm fuzzy" game we played in high school -- do you know about this? Basically a couple of people get a yarn pom-pom on a string necklace. If somebody does something nice, makes you smile, makes you happy, you give them the warm fuzzy! They pass the warm fuzzy on to somebody else, and so on.

What To Do When Your Child Hates Milk

These are good for adults who hate milk too (like me)!

Ten MORE Things to do With Essential Oils

10 Feb 2006 05:03 PM

A drop or two of essential oil in your shoes shouldn't harm the material -- shoes are pretty sturdy! But if your shoes are especially delicate, you might not want to risk it. I've used geranium essential oil in my stinky sneakers with no problem... and in a pair of slippers I wasn't ready to part with. :)

Bulb Flower Gardens

10 Feb 2006 02:04 PM

I have a black thumb (instead of a green one) and just about the only thing I can grow are bulb flowers! I love gladiolas and lilies, myself.

(Did you know certain types of lilies are dangerous/poisonous to cats? I wonder if any of the other bulb plants are potentially hazardous to pets.)

Stretch Your Way to Health

09 Feb 2006 05:14 PM

I love starting the day with a stretch! It makes me feel so limber and healthy and alert.
