North Carolina Genealogy Resources

North Carolina flagOne of the nicknames of North Carolina is “The Old North State”. This was to differentiate it from South Carolina. Are you searching for more information about your ancestors who once lived in North Carolina? Try some of these genealogy resources for the state of North Carolina. Perhaps one of them has what you are hoping to find.

Cyndi’s List is probably the most comprehensive list of links to online genealogy resources. If it exists online, Cyndi’s List probably has a link to it! They have a page called “United States – North Carolina”. Start by selecting any of the many categories on the page. Choose from: “Birth, Death, Marriage”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and many more!

Ancestry.com has a page with links to all of their North Carolina collections of records. In order to access these records, you need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Once in a while, a few collections will be offered for free. Return to their page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently being offered for free.

GeneaLinks has a search engine at the top of their page. Put your ancestor’s first and last name into it. Select the type of record you want to search through: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to North Carolina genealogy. Did you know that most of the state’s records go back to around 1913?

FamilySearch has a Wiki page that is about North Carolina. There are links to FamilySearch Wiki pages to each and every county in the state. You can also find links to major repositories of records that are located in North Carolina. Towards the bottom of their page are a list of links to FamilySearch Wiki pages that talk about specific collections of North Carolina genealogy records.

Facebook has a Community Page for FamilySearch North Carolina Genealogy Research. This is a good resource for genealogists who want to connect with other genealogists who are also working on North Carolina genealogy right now. It is also a source where you can find out about FamilySearch collections that are relevant to North Carolina.

Internment.net has cemetery records online. Start by putting the first and last name of your ancestor into the search engine at the top of their page. Or, you can start by selecting one of the counties in North Carolina. It looks like about half the counties have a link attached to them. If there is a link, it means that Internment.net has information about the records from cemeteries that are located within that county.
