LDS Holistic Living Conference

Did you know about the LDS Holisitic Living Conference? I didn’t either until last year when a friend of mine told me about it, and now, it is coming up again this weekend. I’m hoping I get the opportunity to go. If not this year, then definitely next year. What is it all about? Well, it is a one day conference dedicated to teaching members of the church about living healthier lives, both physically and spiritually. While the church does not officially endorse this conference, it is full of good information for any member of the church that wants to … Continue reading

Eating Organic and Local For Less: Part Two

Do you want to go green in the kitchen? Cost can be a big factor that prevents families from eating organic and local food. Here are more ideas to help you eat healthy, local food and support local farmers! Get local! Food deserts are a rising concern. In these places, it’s hard to find any sort of healthy food aside from a convenience store. If you have a hard time getting to a store to shop for healthy food, you may be living in a food desert. In this case, programs like Farm to School programs or mini seasonal markets … Continue reading

Our Certified Organic Mattress

Today was a big day for my husband and me. One of the key ingredients in our plan to keeping Maggie’s lungs healthy, and slowing down the progression of cystic fibrosis, is to keep as many toxins out of our home as possible. Since we all need new mattresses – us because we are severely overdue for one, and her because she is moving on up to a toddler bed – we went to Green Mountain Organics in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to look for certified organic mattresses. While more expensive than a traditional mattress, certified organic mattresses don’t contain the … Continue reading

Better Living Through Chocolate

It’s Easter, and this means that it took my daughter an hour and a half to go to sleep last night. This is by no means due to her chocolate intake, of course. She had two Easter egg hunts and a special family dinner yesterday, and the chocolate threshold was quite high. Thank goodness for our special smoothies in the morning, or I suspect that her vegetable tally would have been close to zero yesterday. Chocolate is a vegetable, isn’t it? It comes from the cacao tree. Now, I have nothing against chocolate. It does contain sugar and it does … Continue reading

Simple Living

Simple living is something I long to accomplish. I sit here and look around my cluttered house, filled with mostly things I don’t need. I waste money on these items and am just creating unnecessary trash when I throw them away. I do try to recycle and donate whenever possible, but really, I’d rather just have less stuff. I know I eat way too much junk food and spend far too little quality time with my family. And that is the basis for the simple living movement. Minimize your lifestyle to what you need and love and get rid of … Continue reading

More About Sustainable Living and Its History

We talk a lot about sustainable living, sustainable fashion, sustainable architecture, and sustainable food. Tonight, I was watching “King of Queens” and Doug decided to become a vegetarian and become more socially conscious, purchasing Carrie a dress made of hemp. Of course, Doug didn’t stay a vegetarian for long – how funny would that have been? But, many people today are making a conscious effort to live a more sustainable lifestyle. So, what is sustainable living? It is the choice to live your life by doing as little damage as possible to others (that includes animals) or the environment. Simply … Continue reading

Green Living and Eating

Maybe it’s just me, but I had never associated my eating habits with going green. However, a recent article I read suggested that by eating less we are consuming fewer resources. The world is all about consumption, and if we want to cut that down, then eating less would make sense. I also thought about the trips my family has made over the years to fast food restaurants. We have consumed a lot of McDonalds. Not only that, but if I were to calculate the amount of emissions that have been produced due to those trips I would probably be … Continue reading

Organic Flowers for Fall

When we think of organic, it is usually related to food or maybe even in home goods. We like to buy organic produce, organic chicken and even organic sheets and clothing. But one area that we tend to forget about when it comes to organic is flowers. Fall is a wonderful time of year to decorate your home and outdoor living space with flowers. There is an almost endless bounty and variety of flowers for Autumn. Why not take advantage of what nature has to offer, but do so responsibly? Organic flowers are both harder and easier to find than … Continue reading

Do You Need to Wash Organic Produce?

Yesterday, we took a trip to nearby Lancaster County, the home of a large Amish community, along with a lot of Amish tourist trade. Still, there are plenty of interesting places to visit that are not on the beaten path. One of these spots is an Amish family owned and run natural food store. Whenever we visit Lancaster, we usually stop by this store to stock up on organic products in bulk, such as flour, rice, sugar and snacks. This particular day, they were featuring organic gala apples at only $1 a pound! This is a great deal, considering that … Continue reading
