Celadon Road: Safe and Green Products for Little Ones

When I shop for health and body care products for my kids, I look for quality ingredients and not chemicals. Why would I want to wash my child with a bunch of harsh chemicals that soak into their skin? Perhaps one or two exposures are harmless but my motto is why hope for “no effect” when you can provide healthy effects? I do not want to risk my children’s skin on products that may dry their skin, cause irritations, or anything associated with long term chemical exposure. It is time we demand better products made with the best ingredients. One … Continue reading

Natural Organic First Aid: Omyst

It makes little sense to me to use unnatural or harsh chemicals to treat a boo boo. I always prefer to use natural organic products on my children. I have found that natural methods work better and have more applications. Omyst is one such product that is natural, organic, and can be used for a variety of first aid needs. Omyst was developed by Noreen Mulvanerty, RN, MSN, FNP-BC. Noreen is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Herbalist with over twelve years of Emergency Room experience and an expert on wound care. Who better to develop the first 100% natural organic … Continue reading

A Warning About Natural Skincare Products

I have extremely sensitive skin. Unfortunately, my daughter also inherited the condition and was diagnosed with eczema as an infant. As such, I have spent a great deal of money on “natural” skincare products for both of us. When my daughter was first diagnosed with eczema her doctor recommended Eucerin. So I went out and dropped nearly 20 bucks for 10 ounces of the cream. It worked for about two weeks. I then tried a litany of other “Purely Organic” and “All Natural” products. I even considered slathering Crisco on her skin as recommended by another doctor whose children suffered … Continue reading

Care of African American Children in Transracial Adoptions: Basic Hair care

In my previous two articles, I wrote about winter skincare and summer skincare and for African American Children in transracial adoptions. I will now address how to take care of hair that is different from your own. Generally, Negroid hair works in the opposite way as Caucasoid hair. While a black person’s hair loves oil, a white person’s hair will hate oil. I have actually joked that you could rub a black person’s hair together with a white person’s hair to get a perfect oil balance in each, as the black person’s hair will absorb the excess oil from the … Continue reading

Does an Organic Diet Promote Weight Loss?

Organic food. When plastered onto food labels, it can seem like just another generic marketing term, like “natural” or “heart-smart.” Isn’t anything that comes out of the ground “organic”? In fact, the answer is no. Organic foods are tightly regulated and controlled by U.S. agricultural agencies, and the organic label certifies that the food has been grown or raised (in the case of meat and dairy) without any synthetic chemicals – no petrochemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, dyes, or growth hormones. The organic-food movement is just now gaining widespread attention in the U.S., which means that scientists are behind the curve … Continue reading

What’s In Your Environment

Have you heard that Johnson & Johnson will be cleaning up their personal care products by 2015? Up until recently no one seemed to give much thought to what was in their products. We bought whatever was on sale to clean with and we all have our favorite lotions and potions. Did you ever think about what was in all that stuff you surround yourself with? There has been a push to “go green” and I try to be green but sometimes I fall down on the job. It’s easier to get the scent I want out of a product … Continue reading

Safer Nurseries

Is there any more exciting time in your housekeeping journey than setting up a nursery for your first baby? When Hailey was born we could not afford new baby furniture so we found used furniture and cleaned and painted it. Folding all those tiny little clothes and putting them in the dresser was pure joy. One thing I wasn’t aware of then was how many chemicals a baby is exposed to from birth. In order to protect our children we need to be aware of what they are exposed to regularly. Baby furniture can contain formaldehyde. Crib mattresses give off … Continue reading

Kiss My Face

Lately, I have been doing a lot of research on ingredients in health and beauty products. I already buy many organic food items and try to focus on healthy choices. On one visit to the health food store a woman who worked there told me that if you change anything it should be your health and beauty products. She understood my concerns about the cost of going organic and wanting to prioritize. She informed me that anything you put on your skin gets absorbed right into the blood stream. There is no filtering or protection such as with your liver … Continue reading
