While in the gym this morning I spotted, on one of the two dozen television sets hanging from the wall, a story about an obese 8 year old boy. He was huge, had to be over 300 lbs - and only 8! I was listening to the fine new album from Dr. Dog ("We All Belong"), so I did not hear the report but the images told the whole story. Shots of him playing video games (naturally) and eating enormous meals while his mom sat on the couch next to him smoking away. Not the ideal family scene, for sure. I was encouraged by these images though, for my own family's health and welfare. I feel even better about the way we parent and the decisions we make regarding food and passive, sedetary activities. Teaching Your Baby a Foreign Language: To Buy or Not to Buy? - Blog Entry27 Feb 2007 06:38 PM Thought provoking post Valorie. When my girl was 2, we purchased the BBC language program MUZZY to teach her French as we were planning a 2 week trip to France when she would be 2 1/2. I too was hesitant to buy a television based educational program as we do not utilize the TV for just about anything in our home. I am glad we bought it, the course is terrific. It includes workbook, an audio CD and a CD-ROM "game". She picked up many many words even though we only watched the shows about once a week. Within a month she could say about a dozen words - enough to get by overseas. Once on vacation she was a delight and most every French citizen we encounted was really taken with her ability to say Hi, Thanks, Please in French. It was awesome and so adorable. Dr. Seuss Birthday Party - Blog Entry26 Feb 2007 08:28 PM I neglected to write this in the post, but my daughter shares his birthday. In fact, she was born on his 100th and was delivered a special edition of The Cat in The Hat by some local school kids while still in the hospital. She still has a strong connection to his tales. Secret Family Signals - Blog Entry26 Feb 2007 06:19 PM Great stuff Lauri! My wife and I have a couple little signs but my girl and I do not yet. I am going to work on some secret signal now, after reading this. Hiking with the Family - Blog Entry22 Feb 2007 10:59 AM Hi Lauri, Glad to know you are thawing out in Colorado. We are decidely not hikers but did hike up a sizable hill while at the Pont de Gard in Provence. Our girl, then 2 1/2, lead the way and had a blast. I have just added a couple pictues I took of Pont du Gard from the top of the hill to my photos page. The best gift a father can give his child - Blog Entry21 Feb 2007 12:36 PM I could not agree more with this idea. So simple, but so overlooked in a modern world that has some parent's chasing down material items to make their kids happy. Young girls need to see a constant example of what a real good man is and how women deserve to be treated. No better place to witness all of this than the home. So crucial to the positive development of a young lady. Thanks! From Crib to Bed - A Toddler's Fun Move to a Big Kid Bed! (Part Three) - Blog Entry21 Feb 2007 11:02 AM Oh, good to hear. Thanks so much for the link! Dad's Losing It: Back on Schedule - Blog Entry18 Feb 2007 04:37 PM Thanks Ed, yeah the chips and soda are hard to pass up. A good sandwish just isn't the same with water. It is a hard adjustment, to give up those extras but that is where the real weight loss can occur - by avoiding that extra roll with dinner, soda with lunch, etc. Getting My Mind Right: The Next Phase - Blog Entry17 Feb 2007 08:56 PM I am with you Ed. Dropping the lbs is goal and result oriented and thus easier to focus on, work towards and achieve. Sustaining over a long period of time (a lifetime, ideally) the activity, eating habits, etc. that provided the success is the harder part for me as well. I think because what you are trying to do is less concrete and excitable - not as much fun or momentum in seeing the same weight on the scale (even though that IS the new goal) as seeing the number a bit lower than last time during the weight loss phase! We are here for you Ed. Just hope y'all will be there for me over the next...well, rest of my life! The Powerful Influence of Parents - Blog Entry17 Feb 2007 04:12 PM I could not agree more. I am reading an amazing book called Dad's and Daughters that addresses a father's vital role in raising a confident, bold and healthy young woman. Part of my drive to drop pounds (which I am documenting here on Families.com under the Dad's Losing It heading) is to be a good example of someone who makes good choices in life and cares about being around to watch her grow up. We also have family meals every night of the week and cook with her. Food is so much more important than just satisfying hunger, it can bring people (dad and daughter in my case) together as we cook, bake and crack eggs. Being together in the kitchen teaches about self-sufficiency , raises self-esteem and promotes independence. Great blog. Thanks! |
