More Television Equals Shorter Life

Oh, this was a health study I hated to read about. A study in the most recent issue of the Journal of the America College of Cardiology says that “prolonged sitting” such as in front of the television and computer is bad for your health. The study was conducted by Emmanuel Stamatakis, a Ph.D. epidemiologist at University College London, and his colleagues. The study followed 4,500 Scottish people who were 35 and older and recorded their television time, computer time, and other health behaviors. More than half of those in the study admitted to watching television or sitting at the … Continue reading

Maintaining Your Relationship with Your Teen

One of the things my 13-year-old daughter and I like to do is watch television together. There are some shows that we call “our show.” Shows like “Cake Boss” and “Wife Swap” are some of our favorites. But we also enjoy “Supernanny,” so we were really excited when the new season began last Friday. While the families who have little children are always interesting, I tend to prefer the ones where there are teens involved. I remember thinking back when the show first began. “Let me see you tackle teenagers Miss Supernanny.” So when they finally had a family on … Continue reading

Helping Your Child Climb to Success

When a child struggles with a subject it is hard on both the child and the mom. It is hard to see your child try so hard to succeed and still have difficulty or continue to experience failure. The child begins to feel badly about herself and soon other subjects will suffer as she loses confidence. A homeschooling mom also feels like she is failing since she is the one in charge of her child’s education. The double role of mom and teacher during a time like gets confused and the mom part feels the pain while the teacher part … Continue reading

Do You Feed Your Dog People Food?

Not as innocent as she looks I’ve always fallen somewhere in the middle ground of the should dogs have people food debate, between those I know who never let their dogs have the smallest morsel of human food, and those who (and I’ve actually seen this) will feed their pets several hot dogs at a cookout. I think my stance on the issue was born in part out of laziness. Having a dog has certainly ruined me when it comes to cleaning up after myself in the kitchen. Whenever food falls to the floor during meal preparation, my first instinct … Continue reading

Roving Rabbis: Coming to Your Neighborhood Soon!

While there is a large Jewish population of Miami, far-flung areas of Florida like Green Cove might more readily stock bacon than gefilte fish on store shelves; when people there use the term “Bible Belt,” they aren’t talking about the Tanach. “One thing Jews outside of Jacksonville have in common,” write Zalman Levin and Shmery Labkowski in their Roving Rabbis blog, “is that they are sure they are the only Jews around.” Roving Rabbis is a collection of blogs from 250 Chabad rabbinical students around the world who spend their summer vacation locating Jews in outlying areas from Ireland to … Continue reading

Television Good News and Bad News

If you are a fan of “How I Met Your Mother,” you may be happy to hear that the show will have several guest stars this season. In March, look for Jennifer Lopez to play self-help author Anita Appleby, a self-help author who plans to change womanizing Barney into a relationship guy. Also appearing on the show will be Carrie Underwood as Tiffany, Ted’s love interest. If you are a fan of “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race,” you will be happy to hear that both shows have been picked up. CBS announced that there will be at least two more … Continue reading

Do You Force Your Kids to Apologize?

Why is it that parents are often segregated into two camps: Those who do and those who don’t? Those who apologize to their kids and those who don’t. Those who drag their kids to the mall on Black Friday and those who don’t. Those who allow their kids to run around naked in public and those who don’t. Those who whip slices of pizza at their unruly kid’s head when they are frustrated and those who absolutely, undeniably, under no circumstance, who even consider doing so. And, finally, the ultimate division in parenthood: Those who force their children to apologize … Continue reading

Are Flat Screen Televisions Green?

Unless you are ready to give up television altogether (perhaps not a bad idea) you will impact the environment in different ways, depending on the type of television you choose. Here is a breakdown of what is in your television and how it may be impacting the environment. The best choice for a television is the plain old CRT. This was the original standard for television technology before the gorgeous flat screens came along. CRTs use less energy when they are running, and they don’t have anything to do with nitrogen trifluoride, a chemical that is used in the making … Continue reading

Study Shows That TV Is Bad for Toddlers

DUH! In other breaking news… the sky is blue. For all you parents, who long suspected that exposing your toddler to excessive amounts of television was a bad thing, you now have hard evidence to support your belief. A new study conducted by the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children’s Research Institute found that youngsters who watch too much TV have delayed vocalization and attention problems. However, the reason behind the phenomenon lies not only in the child’s experience with the television, but the impact of television on the adults around him as well. The two-year … Continue reading

Are You Really Listening to Your Spouse?

When you have been married a long time, your spouse can something feel like a comfortable sweater that fits just right and never needs any extra attention to adjust it. One of the downsides to this is that sometimes we really aren’t listening to our spouses when they talk. Back when you were dating or first married, I bet you held on to each syllable that your dear one uttered. You learned about your spouse this way, and were eager to discuss all sorts of things such as the philosophy of life. But once a few years goes by, are … Continue reading
