Do You Feel Inadequate as a Mother?

An article I read today, written almost 35 years ago really resonated with me. Isn’t it amazing how the Lord works? This woman who wrote this article touched someone who wasn’t even born when she wrote it. Me. I have been feeling a lot of feelings lately that I have felt guilty for feeling. Things like, “I can’t wait until my kids are older” and “I have no time to myself” and, “What have I gotten myself into?” I recently had my third child, and life seems chaotic, and overwhelming right now. Adjusting to a new life in the house, … Continue reading

Don’t Let The Media Parent Your Children

Sometimes I let Hailey watch too much TV. It’s an easy habit to fall into, especially when you are a single parent and there are so many things to do. You plop your child in front of the television, just for a few minutes so you can get something done and a habit is started. All the media in our children s lives is like another influence in the house. Our children are bombarded with messages and even if we are diligent about what they watch they may still see things that go against our values. Many shows that you … Continue reading

How To Tell Doctors

Another issue that a parent who adopts a child has is if they start with a new doctor. Today we took Steve to the orthodontist and one of the questions was about mouth injuries. It is very hard to have a conversation telling a doctor about any injuries or history that may be relevant when there are children present. When Steve was younger he did sustain a facial injury when his biological mother’s boyfriend punched him in the face. His adult teeth actually got damaged during that time even though he was only 2 when it happened it permanently damaged … Continue reading

Why Dont We See Grand Ma and Grand Pa

I was driving home from the hospital with the kids after we visited with my husband and I mentioned that their grandmother came to the hospital to visit to see their Dad. The kids asked me why they did not visit with their Grand Parents. Now this is a hard question for me to answer. I know what the reason is but I do not want them to have any negative thoughts about them. Now contrary to everyone’s opinion we never speak ill of the grand parents or other in laws at all. I will not lie to the kids … Continue reading

The HPV Vaccine Does Not Cause “Mental Retardation”

The American Academy of Pediatrics has released a statement that emphasizes that there is no scientific validity to the statement made by presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann in regards to the HPV vaccine. It does not, as the politician believes, cause “mental retardation”. Instead, it protects girls from cervical cancer. During a Republican presidential debate, Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann argued with Texas Governor Rick Perry about his executive order that mandated that all female students be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine. It is clear that she is against this particular vaccine. Her statements that night included: “To have innocent little 12-year-old … Continue reading

Turning Negative Nos into Positive Discipline

Being a kid is hard. Imagine being told what to do even when you do not understand the purpose. Imagine wanting something and it being denied. Imagine being told not to things all day long. Kids are full of mishaps. As parents we are to mold our children into productive and positive people. Yet, kids can make our job difficult since we spend more time saying “no” or “don’t” than “yes” and “do.” If I were told “no” and “don’t” all day I would become discouraged. Discouragement does not manifest into proper behavior and positive attitudes. Wait. Please do not … Continue reading

What is Triple Negative Intra – Ductal Breast Cancer?

So what is triple negative intra-ductal breast cancer? Well it is rather complicated but I am going to try my best to explain it. If you have any other questions email me or post a comment and I will get back to you with what I can. When women under 40 develop breast cancer their cancers tend to have different characteristics than an older person. Although I tend to generalize by saying women, breast cancer affects men too, I apologize for my generalization. The majority of breast cancer patients have tumors that “fed” by estrogen, progesterone, or human growth hormone. … Continue reading

Exploring The Shadows in Your Family Tree

The other day, I read a newspaper article that really made me think. The article was about a woman whose family history research recently revealed some details of events in her father’s past that her parents and other family members had carefully kept from her for her entire life. The events date back to the 1940’s, and they run contrary to what she was raised to believe about Birmingham, Alabama, where she often went to visit her grandparents in the 1960’s. The woman who is the subject of the article is African American. As many of you know, Birmingham, Alabama … Continue reading

Tips If You Don’t Get Along

Yesterday we looked at the situation where your son or daughter falls in love with and marries someone you don’t like. If that is the case what can you do? Don’t put them in a situation where they have to choose between you and the family or the new love. Invariably they will choose the one they are in love with and you will find yourself not seeing them at all. Is that really what you want? I don’t think so. Remember that you have something in common. You both love the same person and want what’s best for them. … Continue reading
