Solid Foods: The Whys - Blog Entry

My second baby refused to eat solids at 6 months of age. I was really worried and mentioned it to her doctor. He told me that breastfed babies don't need solids before 9 months and not to worry. It turned out, she just hated baby food. She started eating at 9 months and pretty much went right to table food. The other 2 started at 6 months, which is when my doctor recommended it.

Should Siblings Be Present During Childbirth? - Blog Entry

I agree with you, Marily. I don't think my girls would like seeing me in labor. They haven't expressed any interest in seeing their brother born, so they will be staying home with Nana and joining us at the hospital after. If they were older, or really wanted to be there, I would probably let them. But, my labors are long and it may be too much. Since they haven't requested to be there, we won't do it. I do admire women who labor at home with the whole family involved though.

Breastfeeding Your New Baby - Blog Entry

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 6 months exclusive breastfeeding and continuing until 12 months, even after starting the baby on solids. The World Health Organization recommends 2 years of breastfeeding. There is some evidence that breastfeeding for 2 years decreases moms risk of breast and ovarian cancers significantly, especially pre menopausal cancers. I let my girls wean themselves and they lost interest between 13 and 16 months, depending on the child. They just gradually stopped on their own. The decision is ultimately up to you and your baby.
