Just scatter some of the seed you've bought, onto decent ground and rake a little dirt over it, then ignore it for the most part. (If the weather's too dry, you might want to water it) It grows very easily, with almost no care. When the plants (there will be several types) are through growing and the seeds are mature, cut the plants and allow to dry until the seeds come loose easily. Put them into a bag and bash it against something to release the seeds. Remove straw and most of the "trash" and store for winter feeding. Rubber Chicken: Stretch that Bird!21 Jun 2007 06:49 PM I skip the step of picking the meat off the bones and go right to boiling the leftovers. The meat will fall off the bones and you can get more of it after boiling it a little while. I then freeze it in half cup portions. One portion will make chicken and homemade noodle soup, another will make chicken with rice soup, another will make chicken salad (use your food processor and add boiled eggs, pickles, onions. etc.) and so on. Advanced Tips: Save Money in The Shower16 Jun 2007 10:20 PM Another way to save is to get in the shower, get wet, then turn the water off while you lather up. Turn the water back on, rinse off and you're done. This can be a little tricky if your water heater isn't near the bathroom, as the water can cool off in the pipes while you're soaping up. Step away from the flow until you have the right temperature again. Getting Help With Your Garage Sale08 Jun 2007 05:05 AM It's a good idea to have help, but be careful of having too many helpers at your garage sale. That can cause confusion and some people will take advantage of that. "That girl over there said I could have it for fifty cents," or "I already paid for it" are examples of what can happen. Frugal Kids Birthday Parties: Ways to Save05 Jun 2007 09:59 AM Good ideas, all! Another option is to use a public park. Many park systems will let you reserve a particular area for parties or gatherings. Save Money While Not Ironing30 May 2007 09:51 AM I'm enjoying your ironing thoughts! :) I'd like to add that you can have the best of both worlds putting clothes in the dryer for about 5 minutes, just long enough so to get the wrinkles out, then take them out and hang them while they're still warm and wrinkle free. When they're dry, fold them as you take them down, or put shirts, etc. on hangers right at the clothesline. You won't have to iron hardly anything and you'll have saved the cost of a dryer load. More Save Money When You Iron28 May 2007 02:53 AM An old fashioned way to dampen clothes and not have to use such high settings, is to sprinkle them. Lay the clothes out on a table and sprinkle or spray them with water, then ril tightly and pack into a basket. When they've all been sprinkled, cover them to keep them damp and let them set for a half day to 24 hours. When you iron them, they'll be evenly dampened and iron easily and quickly. You Know You're Really Frugal When...27 May 2007 06:50 PM I could have written some of these myself. ;) Save Money When You Iron27 May 2007 06:48 PM I enjoy ironing, too! It reminds me of "back home," when my sister and Mom and I used to take turns ironing for a 10 person household. Ice tea, radio on a good station and a good conversation were part of it. An iron may use electricity, but it uses less than a dryer. If you hang your clothes to dry, then iron them, you can save quite a bit of electricity. Yard Sale Shopping: Is Buying Gifts Tacky?26 May 2007 12:43 AM I've used garage sale finds as gifts many times. In the "not new" category, you can often find collectibles. Also, look for things that reflect the interest of a particular person. Older people will appreciate memorabilia, some will enjoy retro items. Pretend like they came from a high priced specialty store. ;) 1 2 |
