Stress: Always Look for the Bigger Picture - Blog Entry

Thanks. Dr. Scott Peck had this same experience in his work "As a psychologist, I have over the years heard some terrible stories of extreme hardship, and yes, these people are often chronically depressed and anxious. And yet, the majority of the so-called "normal" and "healthy" people I interact with have less enlightened views on life than the emotionally ill."

10 Ways To Change Your Attitude - Blog Entry

I like this post. I would have to disagree with only one point.

I believe in what Jesus taught:

[3] The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? [7] They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

and here's the important part:

8] He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so

I don't believe that that tidbit from the Mosaic Law was the only thing from the Bible that was "from the beginning not so".

Specifically, passages that instructed the taking of women captives as war booty, the taking of slaves, execution of witches, etc. The one about hitting kids is yet another such passage.

I respect and agree with what the most Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus, President Gordon B. Hinckley of the Mormon Church, The General Conference of the United Methodist Church, Father Gregory Popcack, etc, etc, etc, about:

"If we really want a peaceful and compassionate world, we need to build communities of trust where all children are respected, where home and school are safe places to be and where discipline is taught by example."

The much-touted biblical argument in support corporal punishment is founded upon proof-texting a few isolated passages from Proverbs. Using the same method of selective scripture reading, one could also cite the Bible as an authority for the practice of slavery, adultery, polygamy, incest, suppression of women, executing people who eat pork, and infanticide. The brutal and vindictive practice of corporal punishment cannot be reconciled with the major New Testament themes that teach love and forgiveness and a respect for the sacredness and dignity of children and which overwhelmingly reject violence and retribution as a means of solving human problems. Would Jesus ever hit a child? NEVER!"

etc..

"When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad, and that's my religion." Abraham Lincoln

Also, I think women in general tend to be way too hard on themselves. Adversity is a normal part of the "program" if you will. I think we should give ourselves permission to be imperfect and recognize all the good we're doing. thanks

This one I would have to disagree with slightly. People may feel some of those things, not because they're necessarily doing something wrong. Things like a chemical imbalance in the brain or body, or child-abuse can cause these feelings and beliefs as well. Even Job described having these feelings. I've also read an account of Joseph Smith Jr. in which he experienced these feelings. I agree with you that focusing on and nurturing the hope and our spiritual growth is how we can get to the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks

I also think its VERY important to trust your intuition. Sometimes people who come with glowing references can be hazardous to your child. During the child-abuse crises involving priests that Catholics had to face, many of the perpetrators were bounced from parish to parish with the help of such letters of referrals. I really think your intuition is a valuable tool in discerning such matters.
