Pennsylvania Will have a Federal Insurance Exchange

The Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett, has announced that Pennsylvania will have a health insurance exchange that is run by the federal government. Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason has released a statement that applauds the governor’s decision. The Affordable Care Act requires all states to have a health insurance exchange. There were three options about how that exchange would be run. One option was to have a state-based health insurance exchange. The deadline for that option has now passed. Another option is to have an exchange that is run as a partnership between the state and the federal … Continue reading

Information About Medicaid in Pennsylvania

Each and every state has a Medicaid program. In Pennsylvania, the Medicaid program is also called the Medical Assistance program, (which is sometimes referred to as MA). It is easy to find the eligibility requirements for Medicaid in Pennsylvania. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to cover individuals and families who are low income and who cannot afford to buy health insurance coverage from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by the federal government. It is also funded by the government of an individual state. In Pennsylvania, the Medicaid … Continue reading

Pennsylvania Cuts Medicaid Dental Coverage

The state of Pennsylvania has decided to cut back on the dental coverage currently offered in their Medicaid program. Medicaid is an insurance for people who are low-income. It is unlikely this group will be able to afford to purchase a private form of dental insurance. I’ve noticed a disturbing trend. It seems that when a state is interested in making cuts, in order to reduce costs and fit within a budget, those cuts come out of the programs that are designed to help the people who have the lowest income. This would be the group that is least able … Continue reading

University of Pennsylvania Extends Insurance Coverage

The University of Pennsylvania, or Penn, has decided to extend their employer sponsored health insurance benefits to include coverage for gender reassignment surgery. This decision puts Penn among the schools who offer this type of coverage to their faculty and staff. A standard health insurance plan probably does not specifically cover the type of health care that a person who is transgendered might require. Triadic treatment includes sex reassignment surgery, hormone therapy, and mental health care. A person who requires triadic treatment is going to find it difficult to afford if it is not covered by their health insurance. Recently, … Continue reading

Study Reveals Financial Impact of Autism on Families

A preliminary study done by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania finds that there is an economic hardship faced by families that have a child who has an autism spectrum disorder. This may not come as a surprise. It turns out, however, that the reasons why this is so may not be what you would suspect. The study is considered preliminary because it was recently presented in a medical meeting. The findings have not yet gone through a peer review, and have yet to be published in a medical journal. This does not necessarily mean that the study is flawed, … Continue reading

Fun Fall Activities for Families: A-maizing Fun Amongst the Corn Stalks

Never underestimate the power of a determined preschooler. It’s a lesson I learned last weekend when our family visited our local corn maze. Rather than get happily lost amongst the stalks in the Kiddie Corn Maze my daughter wanted to roam through the real deal-—more than 3 acres and 2 miles of trails. Did I say roam? I meant lead. The 4-year-old insisted on leading our group of friends (the most good natured friends who possess the patience of saints) through an Amazing Maize maze, carved out of corn stalks five times her height. It took us a while, but … Continue reading

What Hillary Clinton’s Pennsylvania Win Does

On Tuesday, Clinton won the Pennsylvania primary. Yesterday we talked quite a bit about primaries and their role in the run for President. Had she lost, her ability to be elected would be next to null. . .a mathematical impossibility. Actually, it still is nearly a mathematical impossibility. But her win yesterday was important for her campaign and has some serious implications for Obama’s campaign as well. What Hillary’s Win Does for Her First and foremost, it keeps her in the race. Had she lost on Tuesday, I think that she would’ve needed to bow out gracefully. (I’m not saying … Continue reading
