Pets and Politicians

As the 2012 political race heats up candidates are trying to find new angles from which to score voters. Republican candidate Newt Gingrich has chosen pets as one of his. He recently launched a website called “Pets With Newt 2012.” The website mainly functions as a sort of social network, or at least pet picture website, where Gingrich supporters can send in photos of their animals with a caption that provides their name and reads “I’m With Newt!” The site also reveals that Gingrich’s love for animals extends beyond those of the domesticated variety, with a large front page picture … Continue reading

Visiting Minneapolis Airport’s Infamous Bathroom and What NOT To Take Through An Airport Turnstile

Only in America… That’s what I thought when I heard that the bathroom stall made famous by U.S. Senator Larry Craig’s arrest in a sex sting has become a major tourist attraction in the Twin Cities. According to employees at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, thousands of travelers have been taking pictures of the infamous site where the prominent lawmaker claimed he was merely trying to pick up a piece toilet tissue that fell to the ground. The Idaho Republican was arrested June 11 by a Minneapolis airport police officer and later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Since then … Continue reading

Wonder Pets!

Linny, Tuck, and Ming-Ming, too. We’re the Wonder Pets and we’ll help you. We’re not too big and we’re not too tough, but when we work together we’ve got the right stuff! “Wonder Pets!” is all about three preschool classroom pets — a guinea pig, a turtle, and a duckling — who go around helping animals in trouble. At the beginning of each episode, once the classroom is cleared of students, the pets usually get a call on their tin-can phone. Then sing a song about the phone ringing and that there is an animal in trouble. Linny is the … Continue reading

Recommended Reading: How to Talk to Your Animals

Jean Craighead George… if the name sounds at all familiar, you probably know her as a children’s book author. She is a Newberry Medal winner for her writing for children. Her book Julie of the Wolves was one of my favorites as a child. At my local used book store, I found a pair of non-fiction books by Jean Craighead George: How to Talk to Your Cat and How to Talk to Your Dog. To my surprise, I found that the famous children’s author had spent a lot of time studying animal communication! The book is full of stories about … Continue reading

Hamster Successfully Cohabitates with Snake

The best unlikely animal friends stories are the ones where predators and their prey ignore the call of nature and become buddies instead. I could fill this blog with such stories, or even just animal friendship stories, but I try to space it out. I couldn’t ignore this 2006 tale from Japan, however, that garnered international attention. BBC News has the details. Aochan is a two-year-old rat snake residing at the Mutsugoro Okoku zoo in Tokyo. He’s a bit of a picky eater; he rejected the frozen rats presented to him by the zookeepers. So instead, in the fall of … Continue reading

Free Kibble

Please help fill my bowl If you’ve been surfing the Internet for any length of time then you probably know about thehungersite.com, the earliest in a chain of websites that ask users to click on banners every day to donate food or other resources to worthy causes. The series of sites now include support for the rainforest, child literacy, shelter animals, women’s health, and more. It’s obvious with the various rescue sites where the money is coming from; once you’ve made a click you’re redirected to a page that’s plastered with ads. Advertisers pay that charitable money for us to … Continue reading

The Best of YouTube: Disney Edition

How about a little silliness for a Friday? In the tradition of my recurring Pets blog posts on the best of animals on the internet, today I’ve done a round-up of the best Disney-related videos on YouTube. I’m not talking clips from films or music videos made with Disney soundtracks, but the best moments from the parks, song covers, and more. I’ll start off with the first series of videos that inspired this post. Actor Darren Criss has become famous for his role as Blaine on the television show “Glee,” but his internet popularity started before that. On the ‘net … Continue reading

Pet Blessings and Ministries Spreading

Every year the county rescue for which I volunteer holds an Animal Fair. It’s a day in May down at the county fairgrounds where one can bring one’s pets on a leash (so mostly dogs, but you do see the rare cat or two) and partake in fun events to raise money for the rescue. There’s a parade, an owner/dog partnered pie-eating contest, demonstrations by the local K9 police force, and more. And there’s one thing that I’d never heard before: the blessing of the pets. I live in a very Catholic area; it’s the part of Maryland that was … Continue reading

Managing Smart Dogs

Smart is often a selling point for dogs. There are certain breeds, especially those known for herding, that are generally considered the cream of the clever canine crop. Thus if you want an intelligent dog it might not be too hard to seek one out, but there are some things you need to know before adopting a brainy companion. Pet site ZooToo has some tips. The most important thing to consider first is that smart doesn’t necessarily mean easy. We think that it will; we think how nice it will be to have a dog that can fetch slippers and … Continue reading
