Getting Back to Basics

Sick of snapping photos with trees growing out of your kid’s head? Tired of capturing photos with missing limbs and blurry body parts? Then, it may be time to get back to the basics of photography. Rule of Thirds: This is one of the rules of photography that can be broken and still yield frame worthy shots. When it comes to composition, placing your subject dead center in the frame can create a powerful image. However, in most cases, you want to stick with the Rule of Thirds which recommends drawing imaginary lines on the camera viewfinder to create a … Continue reading

Getting Kids Involved in Photography

My daughter owns two digital cameras. Did I mention that she’s six years old? My mom says I am to blame for my daughter’s camera obsession. According to my dear, sweet mother, I’ve scarred my child by having her pose for nearly 15,000 photos since her birth. Apparently, my kid is so sick of being in front of the lens that she has taken to hiding behind it. I think my mom’s analysis may be a bit dramatic, though my daughter really does prefer being behind the camera than in front of it. However, I attribute that trait to her … Continue reading

How Much Do You Know About Digital Photography?

Enough to teach others about it? Whereas my grandfather was a professional photographer, and I love taking pictures, I don’t know nearly enough about the finer details of digital photography to make money teaching others about it. Yet, a few weeks ago I was approached by a former colleague (who happens to be a professional videographer) to assistant him with a digital photo workshop he was putting on at a local community college. I declined due to a scheduling conflict, but I kept the outline he designed, which included the following basic points of discussion. In regards to the benefits … Continue reading

Back to Basics

Purchasing an expensive DSLR camera and costly high-tech photo editing devices won’t guarantee stellar shots. Rather, the key to snapping spectacular photos is simple: Master the basic rules of photography. Before you drop hundreds of dollars on pricey photo equipment, consider getting back to basics. Experiment with lighting, composition, angles and poses. By investing time instead of money honing your craft, you’ll reap priceless images that speak volumes for your picture-taking skills. COMPOSITION When in doubt employ the Rule of Thirds. By doing so you can avoid taking a boring shot where your subject is dead center in the photo. … Continue reading

Camera Care Tips

My 3-year-old daughter is a self-described “big girl” now and consequently she doesn’t like me to push her on the swings at the park. Instead, she feels it is her job to push me. Frankly, I enjoy the ride, and the other day it gave me the opportunity to witness an unfortunate scene. To placate her screaming toddler one of the moms at the park handed her son what looked to be a very expensive camera. Within seconds of getting his hands on the device he tossed it into a nearby sandbox. (Surprise, surprise.) I winced and wondered what might … Continue reading

Digital Photography 101: An Introduction

Enough is enough. I’m throwing down the gauntlet. My co-blogger Nicole and I have written a number of blogs explaining why we prefer using film cameras rather than digital ones. However, we are by no means digital camera rebels and to prove my point I have decided to write a series of blogs on digital photography starting with this introduction blog. If you own a digital camera—welcome to the club. More than a third of American households now own digital cameras, and that number continues to grow. In fact, studies show that roughly 25 million digital cameras will be sold … Continue reading

Digital Camera Basics

Digital photography is really not that different than old fashioned film photography (still my favorite). It does however, stand to reason, that there are new terms, techniques and types of equipment to learn. The digital camera comes in two different form, a point and shoot style and a single lens reflex (which is usually referred to as SLR). If you are looking for a simple, easy to use, basic digital camera – the point and shoot is definitely the style to go with. These usually range in price quite a bit, and are available by most manufacturers. They are the … Continue reading

Photography Blog Goals

Photography is definitely one of my passions and I am continually striving to be better with each picture I take. I grew up in a world where photography was an everyday part of my life. My mother was a professional photographer for many years, and a hobbiest for the rest and really still is. We had a dark room in our basement which extremely often, my mother could be found in. I learned about chemicals and processing. I learned about various films, what they were and how they would help take different styles of photographs. I learned about different styles … Continue reading
