Gearing Up for a Plethora of Photo Ops

Dads, grads, and new pads. The coming weeks bring an avalanche of special photo opportunities, from graduation ceremonies to Father’s Day, weddings and summer moves. If your camera has been hibernating for the winter, now is the time to wipe off the cobwebs and get shooting. For those of you who received a new camera for Christmas but have been putting off using it, the upcoming holidays and special events are prime opportunities to experiment. However, before you get snapping, it’s a good idea to acquaint yourself with your camera’s many modes. For example, even if you don’t have an … Continue reading

The Downside of the Digital Photography Revolution

Many of the videographers I used to work with when I was in TV news have branched out and are now making money taking still photos with professional-grade digital cameras. I had the chance to catch up with one of them Saturday night and discovered that the digital photography revolution has some hidden downsides most amateur shutterbugs may not be aware of. My former colleague’s biggest complaint is that digital cameras are so affordable these days it has created a wave of amateur photographers thinking they can make a quick buck. My pal claims that in an effort to generate … Continue reading

Gearing Up for the Big Game

We’re only in the second week of the new school year, though you’d never know it looking around our small town. Store marquees are already counting down to the big Homecoming football game and Halloween candy has made its way into sack lunches. Forget about pool parties and late night picnics, folks in these parts have their cameras focused squarely on the football field. Like many tiny towns across the country, high school pigskin is king around these parts. Players’ parents, siblings, friends and classmates arrive early to stake out prime picture-taking spots around the field. Fortunately, this time of … Continue reading

What Is Your Dream Camera?

Right now I shoot with a Nikon D3000 and a 50mm prime. I actually love my current setup; it is a great system and I get pretty good results with it. It does have its limitations, however. For one, my camera does not have HD video, and that is something I would like for taking video of my family. The ISO (light sensitivity) is also limited, which means my pictures get noisy in low light conditions, even with the fast prime lens. (I do not use flash unless absolutely necessary.) My camera body is also geared towards those who are … Continue reading

Hot Summer Cameras

I have a summer birthday so this is the time of year that I typically research new cameras so I can put them on a short list of gifts that I would love to see next to my birthday cake. Though, this year is a bit different since I just received a wonderful new digital camera for Mother’s Day. Still, I love reading about the latest and greatest cameras and other photo gear on the market. Recently, Consumer Reports released its picks for the best brands of digital cameras on the market. If you are considering upgrading your current digital … Continue reading

Choosing an Underwater Camera

In my last blog I revealed that my new goal for 2008 is to experiment with underwater photography. Currently, I do not own an underwater camera so I have been doing research on what type of equipment I will need and how much it will cost me. It didn’t take me long to realize that underwater photography is far from a cheap hobby, though the results seem to make the time, effort and money worth it. If you too are interested in taking beautiful pictures under the sea (or in the deep end of the pool) you are going to … Continue reading

More Ways You Can Protect Your Camera While on Vacation

In my previous blog I listed ways you could protect your camera while vacationing in a place with frigid temperatures. This blog is tailored to help those of you who are planning to take your camera to a tropical location. While the weather might be pleasant other elements could prove detrimental to your camera—-if you are not prepared. Before you head off on your island getaway consider purchasing a lens adapter and a skylight filter. Each provides added protection from the elements for both the lens barrel and the lens itself. Also, you’ll want to make sure your camera bag … Continue reading

Photography Month in Review—-February

What a month it has been. I spent the majority of February in Hawaii visiting with my ailing grandma. Naturally, I brought my camera along. Only I didn’t bring my computer, which made it hard for me to write as many blogs I am normally do. So what would be the Photography Week in Review is now (just for this entry) the Photography Month in Review. If you missed any of the exciting items covered this month now is your chance to get caught up. Photo Challenges. Can you recall your most challenging photo shoot? One of my most memorable … Continue reading

Photography Potpourri: Photo Labels and Photo Gear

Do you drink bottled water? Have you ever considered giving bottled water as a gift? I hadn’t either until I attended a bridal shower and was given a party bag with a personalized bottle of water in it. The bride-to-be had created custom-made labels featuring a picture of her and her fiancé sitting near a stream. She simply wrapped the labels around ordinary bottles of water and gave them away as gifts. I thought it was a clever idea and later found out how easy the labels were to make. Here’s what to do: You don’t necessarily have to give … Continue reading

Photography Week in Review for September 10-16, 2007

With the fall season in full gear, at least here in the Midwest, my camera has been out a lot more often to capture natures changes, my children playing outdoors, and anything else my heart desires. I love to have my camera in hand, and I love to try to get that perfect shot. Sometimes I succeed, and other times I fail. But no matter what, the memory is captured and I can preserve it however I want. Here is what has been up in the Photography Blog this week. Reasons To Use Digital Cameras At Your Wedding I’m not … Continue reading
