Black and White Photography Basics

Everything is new again and such is the case with black and white photography. A few short decades ago black and white photos were considered old and unpopular, but in recent years the power of classic black and white stills has returned and now many avid photographers are embracing the purity of these beautiful photographs. But before you run to the store to purchase black and white film or click on every digital image to mute its color there are some factors you should consider: SUBJECT It’s important to choose your subjects carefully when you are shooting in black and … Continue reading

Getting Back to Basics

Sick of snapping photos with trees growing out of your kid’s head? Tired of capturing photos with missing limbs and blurry body parts? Then, it may be time to get back to the basics of photography. Rule of Thirds: This is one of the rules of photography that can be broken and still yield frame worthy shots. When it comes to composition, placing your subject dead center in the frame can create a powerful image. However, in most cases, you want to stick with the Rule of Thirds which recommends drawing imaginary lines on the camera viewfinder to create a … Continue reading

Getting Kids Involved in Photography

My daughter owns two digital cameras. Did I mention that she’s six years old? My mom says I am to blame for my daughter’s camera obsession. According to my dear, sweet mother, I’ve scarred my child by having her pose for nearly 15,000 photos since her birth. Apparently, my kid is so sick of being in front of the lens that she has taken to hiding behind it. I think my mom’s analysis may be a bit dramatic, though my daughter really does prefer being behind the camera than in front of it. However, I attribute that trait to her … Continue reading

How Much Do You Know About Digital Photography?

Enough to teach others about it? Whereas my grandfather was a professional photographer, and I love taking pictures, I don’t know nearly enough about the finer details of digital photography to make money teaching others about it. Yet, a few weeks ago I was approached by a former colleague (who happens to be a professional videographer) to assistant him with a digital photo workshop he was putting on at a local community college. I declined due to a scheduling conflict, but I kept the outline he designed, which included the following basic points of discussion. In regards to the benefits … Continue reading

Succeeding in Stock Photography

Once you decide that stock photography is the way you’d like to make money with your favorite photos, then the next step is to conduct research on the stock agencies you want to work for. Stock agencies are considered the liaison between photo buyers and sellers. As a middle man, the stock agency hosts photos, provides search capabilities, completes billing and pays the photographer commission on a regular basis. In addition, the agency keeps a percentage of the transaction for services rendered. When examining your stock agency options consider that most fall into one of two categories: Macrostock and microstock … Continue reading

Back to Basics

Purchasing an expensive DSLR camera and costly high-tech photo editing devices won’t guarantee stellar shots. Rather, the key to snapping spectacular photos is simple: Master the basic rules of photography. Before you drop hundreds of dollars on pricey photo equipment, consider getting back to basics. Experiment with lighting, composition, angles and poses. By investing time instead of money honing your craft, you’ll reap priceless images that speak volumes for your picture-taking skills. COMPOSITION When in doubt employ the Rule of Thirds. By doing so you can avoid taking a boring shot where your subject is dead center in the photo. … Continue reading

Digital Photography 101: An Introduction

Enough is enough. I’m throwing down the gauntlet. My co-blogger Nicole and I have written a number of blogs explaining why we prefer using film cameras rather than digital ones. However, we are by no means digital camera rebels and to prove my point I have decided to write a series of blogs on digital photography starting with this introduction blog. If you own a digital camera—welcome to the club. More than a third of American households now own digital cameras, and that number continues to grow. In fact, studies show that roughly 25 million digital cameras will be sold … Continue reading
