Frugal Laundry: Make Your Own "Detergent" - Blog Entry

04 Sep 2007 06:38 PM

We also add borax and water softener to our laundry detergent. It makes 5 gallons and lasts us 6 months. Our water is really hard, so we need the water softener to make the detergent work. Thankfully there is very little of it, as both are not great for the environment. Ours works out to .625% borax, and half that for the water softener. Commercial detergents can be up to 75% phosphates. No wonder the environment is suffering!

Cool blog! Thanks for writing!

Dry Your Clothes Twice as Fast - Blog Entry

This is so true. We replaced an accordian vent hose with a rigid metal hose. I've been able to chop 10 - 20 minutes off the drying time per load, depending on the size of the load. My own preference is for hang drying, but when time is short, it helps to know these things. Thanks for such a cool blog!
