I'll let you know what my family thinks of the April Conference Quiz Game after we play. We will learn by just discussing the topics, even if we don't answer the questions correctly. Our memories of the messages will come back as we talk together - hopefully ;). I want to challenge my teenagers to read and discuss one talk with me or their Dad on Sunday and then maybe we can make up some additional questions together. There was an Ensign article I read recently about using questions in lessons - how to develop questions that encourage discussion, thought and application. Good questioning is a fine tuned skill. It would be a good skill for me, as a mother, to work on! Family Home Evening: General Conference - Blog Entry07 Apr 2008 01:57 PM I'm starting to feel the excitement that comes when I've heard conference, but can't read it yet! I strive to remember and apply conference messages. For family night we'll play a conference quiz game to review - like the one at LDSGreats. Make questions of different difficulty levels so everyone in the family can play. As you make questions for the game you will learn a ton that you might have missed, even if you listened to it all. Maybe one family night could be used to make up the questions and the next family night to play the game. Purchase a few prizes. For younger children, you can give a small candy, (skittles or something) with each turn, so they don't lose interest. Effective Family Home Evenings - Blog Entry05 Apr 2008 08:51 PM I used to do all the preparation myself and then get disappointed when the children quickly lost interest. Now we let them take turns leading family night, unless we feel a particular topic is critical. They usually choose to do something from the Faith in God or Duty to God booklets. Sometimes they chose a picture from the Gospel Art Picture Kit to discuss. The less elaborate the better, but it does need to interest them. We always begin and end with a prayer and a song. The family home evening after conference I plan to review what we heard with a conference quiz game I found at http://www.ldsgreats.com/general-conference-c-78.html I'm hoping the children won't show the parents up ;) Family Home Evening: General Conference - Blog Entry23 Oct 2007 12:25 AM I remember my dad used to pay a quarter for every apostle we could name while we sat in the tabernacle waiting for conference. (Only on Saturday, of course!) Now while we are at home between conference sessions our children have contests to see who can match the apostles fastest. There is an online game is at http://www.ldsgreats.com/fun-c-4.html This is fun as a Family Night Game, too! My children and husband usually have a much faster time than me - so I stay humble ;) Relief Society: "What Latter-Day Saint Women Do Best: Stand Strong and Immovable" - Blog Entry18 Oct 2007 11:47 AM I found big parallels between this talk and the 2008 mutual theme. I think it will help young women transition into Relief Society because both organizations are thinking about the same theme scripture in Mosiah 5:15. The terms steadfast and immovable used in the scriptures are impossible to misunderstand even though they are not commonly used. A game to help introduce the theme is at http://www.ldsgreats.com I did feel spoken to as I listened to this theme, because I need to refocus on faith, family, and relief. She speaks plainly and boldly. I admire her conviction and courage. 2008 Mutual Theme - Blog Entry03 Oct 2007 11:49 PM After listening to the General Women's Broadcast, I'm also convinced that service (good works) will unite the youth just like it does in Relief Society. My ward was recently asked by our bishop to pray and fast to know how we should serve others. I think we often just do what we've always done, yet that may not be the way Christ would have us serve. This is a powerful scripture even just for me as a mother, serving in my home, trying to help the faith of my children with my testimony. I think you have a great idea to focus on this as a family. With one son in YM now, if our ward doesn't end up buying the youth wristbands to help remind them of this message, I may order some from - http://www.ldsgreats.com/resources-young-women-c-5_22.html at .80 it seems easy. In the past before family prayer, I've tried to say something inspiring like "Do your very best", "Remember who you are", "First things first", well, maybe this scripture could be the theme for our family this year. Young Women: Integrity - Blog Entry28 Sep 2007 02:43 PM The 2008 YM/YW Theme is all about integrity - "Be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works. Mosiah 5:15 What a powerful scripture!!! I wish we could keep the youth thinking about this all year long. I gave a lds young woman from Germany a LDSGreats.com wristband bracelet thing with the theme. The scripture looked like the way the kids text each other on their cell phones. She liked it and hopefully it will help her be steadfast and immovable. Young Women: 4 Ideas for Service Projects - Blog Entry28 Sep 2007 02:23 PM There is a meaningful service idea that young women could sew for people in assisted living centers. I found it under Service at LDSGreats.com I guess even young men could learn how to sew a button hole on a sewing machine ;) When I had three young children, a girl in our ward came over several times to play with my children while I fixed dinner. At the time I didn't realize that I was her service project. How blessed I was by her help - at a time of the day, when we sometimes come unraveled. Gift of a Father's Day Poem - Blog Entry06 Jun 2007 11:05 PM I love the poem. Thanks. Or you could give them a large (Daddy-sized) sand colored die cut footprint and have them write (or draw for younger ones) on the footprint a good thing they see their Father do that they want to do to so they will be like him and follow in his footsteps. Email me, if you want footprint information. Young Women: Knowledge - Blog Entry06 Jun 2007 10:26 PM If your daughter is online a lot, you might show her a site that has an online or downloadable free game of Match the Apostles(try to beat the clock) - maiaco.com then click on the software tab. She will become more familiar with the apostles while having fun with you. The cousins in our family try to beat the fastest time. This might help light a spark for gospel learning. At the least it would be fun to read a talk from the most recent conference for FHE and then play the game together as a family. |
