A "Green" Way To Get Rid Of Garden Pests - Blog Entry

We use natural ingredients to ward off the pests! The kids can get involved as well with spray bottles hunting down the little critters and we pay them a nickle a piece. Works great, fun and safe!!

Should You Start a Direct Sales Blog? - Blog Entry

Tracy...

Thanks for your ideas! How is it we go about starting our own blog? I really don't know much about it. I'll review your sites above.

I think it would go a long way towards building team unity, fellowship, strengthening the cause and keeping people plugged in. Fantastic idea! Again, thanks!

"My Child Keeps Staring into Space." Is it ADHD? Or a Seizure Disorder? - Blog Entry

20 Feb 2007 09:22 AM

Kristin...

Thank you for your entry and clarifying the 2 diagnoses.

We've suspected our son, Gannan, may have some sort of neurological challenge. The terms "autism" and "ADHD" certainly have crossed our minds. He can get frustrated easily and shut down, be hard to get the attention of, find it difficult to concentrate, and then at other times, be able to concentrate on the finest of details. His observations and comments on what he sees and observes are often beyond his years (he's 7).

We started to research avenues as we were very hesitant about the side effects of conventional ADHD meds. We were able to find that there is some documented evidence that Omega 3 and grape seed/grape skin extract can be very beneficial to the brain/neuro system in general, and the ADHD challenged person. So, without any known side effects, we've tried him on these supplements. To our amazement he has made a noticeable and dramatic improvement in his mental/neuro arena. What a blessing!!

Again, thanks for your entry. It's was helpful to me.

Can You Still Save Money if You're Starting a Business? - Blog Entry

I might also add that when you're looking at business opportunities and ideas you may want to do, there's some basic considerations before you start the actual business:

First, look at what you're passionate about. You'll never be successful at something you hate.

Second, once you know your passion, look at opportunities that have unending potential to grow without requiring more and more and more time from you. Look at a business that you can teach others to do with you. This is one foundation of leadership...teaching others to do what you're doing.

Third, look at overhead involved in operating the business on a daily basis. Look at everything from office supplies, product costs, time investment, return on investment. You'll want to select a business that has as low an operating overhead as possible to maximize your profit and minimize your risk.

Lastly, although it seems risk is necessary to be entrepreneurial, it's not always financial resources that we need to risk. That simply is a myth. There are other resources we can risk. Find a company or a business that asks you to risk your time and invest in improving the lives of others as the risk. I prefer risking my time investing in others to help them be better as opposed to our finances to make my business better. Investing in people is always beneficial. Investing in businesses isn't. There are thousands that, while working hard and investing $$ in their business, still fail. They risked the wrong resource.

I think you're both on to something.

First, you talk about making it a priority. We always devote ourselves to those things that are important to us...those things we've set up in our mind that have value. That doesn't mean they're necessarily valuable, just that we see them as having value (e.g. spending time watching American Idol might be denoted as "valuable" to us, but does little to help us become better, build our business or ourselves). Those things we denote as important are what command our attention, energy and resources. We must make sure that the "important" things are really the important things. I've heard it said "make the main thing the main thing.".

Second, Salena is on to something by making failure more uncomfortable than success. When she's not successful, she makes the direction she's not going more painful or uncomfortable. That's a wonderful motivator capitalizing on the very basic principle that we always seek comfort over achievement. So, if you're not going the right direction, make the direction you want to go more desireable than the direction you're going.

Brilliant. Bravo!

Thanks for the reminder! Very helpful principles to remember!!

Can You Really Start a Home Business for Less Than a Latte? - Blog Entry

13 Feb 2007 08:14 AM

Tracy,

You're totally right on those "hidden" costs in running some home biz opportunities. That's the details they "forget" to mention, or, when you ask about them, they pass off as "the cost of having your own business" and start talking about all the tax advantages...blah, blah, blah. We ran into that as well and lost >$5,000 in a year. That was an expensive lesson, but one well learned. I'm curious. Have you ever seen a home biz other than your freelance writing where you don't have to spend $$ on "team incentives, postage, customer gifts, sales, logo gear, travel expenses, party expenses and more"? We found it becomes pretty difficult to turn a profit when we're doing all that. Also, it's not all that duplicatable. We couldn't find many others who wanted to spend their hard earned $$ in that way?

Looking for my waist: Chronic Under Eating - Blog Entry

09 Feb 2007 09:03 AM

Andrea...

I can sympathize with your lack of discipline in eating. I'm a chronic "1 meal a day" eater due to my busy schedule as a physical therapist, basketball coach, father of 5. My wife finds it remarkable that I can go all day without eating. It's just something I've gotten used to.

I'm not sure I can give you magical advice on great weightloss diets or anything like that but, here's my 2 cents worth. I'm hopeful it helps...

Even though I'm a inconsistent scheduled eater, I wouldn't necessarily consider it being undisciplined. I'm ok with being hungry. That's my mentality. When I eat, I try to be knowledgable of what I'm eating. It's not brain surgery. Eat right. We all know or can find out what that means. Move more. That's simple as well.

Here's the point of my advice...it's our perspective on food. I have thought that food is much, much too important in our lives. We have rooms designed for it, furniture made for it, books written for it, time set aside for it. We even set up entire networks on television for it. Hmmmmm. Could it be an idol in our life?

It is true that if we want change, we have to change. Everything successful in life comes about first with a change in thinking. There are no accidental weight loss plans out there. You have to educate yourself, strengthen your mind for the battle ahead (and it is a battle) and sacrifice what you have been doing for what you should be doing. That principle is in place for anything you do in life...if you want to be successful at it.

There are no magic diets out there, no special fads we can hope to maintain the rest of our life to slender down and get fit. It takes discipline and commitment, knowledge and perseverance. Most of all, it takes a change in thinking. I'm a firm believer you need to look a food differently. It can't be that important. Eat to live. That's it.

My recommendation would be to get different information to produce different results. Educate yourself, make the commitment to yourself and finish the job!! Recognize food as being way too important in your life and learn to downplay its importance. There are many, many things more important!

Blessings to you in your journey.

Unfortunately, I Have Yet to Find the "Get Rich Quick" WAHM Job - Blog Entry

Tracy...

Amen...

There's a saying..."Work works". There's also a saying "If you're rowing a boat, is it helpful to go faster...if you're going in the wrong direction?".

Work works, only if you're going in the right direction. That was our problem for years. I mean, we were willing to do the work. We were doing the work. But we never saw the results. We received encoruagement from our "mentors" to just keep "doin what yur doin" even though what we were "doin" wasn't working. We were rowing as fast as we could...right over the falls.

Now, we work less (but still work) but our work is counting for more. We've found that business we love, benefits other, hurts no one, and allows us to make a comfortable living without this crazy, helter skelter, fox-in-the-henhouse, I've-forgotten-the-names-of-my-children mentality. There's a sigh of relief in our business...a peace about it. We've found it. We know it's built on solid principles. It makes total sense.

All we have to do now is the work. We can do that, right? When you combine work with logical thinking and eliminate as much selfishness as you can, you come up with something pretty amazing. We're so blessed we've found it!
