I too, am in the insurance industry. I told my boss as soon as we signed with our adoption agency that we were in the process of adopting. He seemed happy. A couple of weeks ago I asked him if I would be allowed to take time off if/when a child was placed with us and he said that I could use my 2 weeks vacation. I was very disappointed, but tried to hide it. We are a small office, the owner, 2 full time employees and one part time employee. Then a week ago my co-worker found out she was pregnant. While I was at home doing my home study with our Caseworker, she asked him if she would get maternity leave and he told her yes. I am sooooooo frustrated that adoption is not viewed the same as maternity in the work place. Yes, I understand there is not a physical healing that needs to take place. BUT THERE IS an emotional healing. And we all know that can take a lot longer than any physical pain. So, I am very frustrated with his response. We have our reviews next week and I am going to bring this issue up. As things stand right now, I may be looking for a position where I can work from home, or work for a different employer. There is NO WAY we can make it on one income right now. I am really afraid to just take 2 weeks (or 3 even) to get to know the child that we may be blessed with. Adoptive Parenting Traits, Part 2 - Blog Entry16 Jan 2007 09:22 PM as a hopeful future adoptive parent (my new title in life!), i think your article brings us hope. we did learn about these behaviors in class and it is pretty scary to think that a little child can do harm to a grown person in one of these fits. to see that you went through them with your kids and all of you have worked through that is encouraging. it may not be easy, but it is something that can be overcome. Adoptive Parenting Traits - Blog Entry15 Jan 2007 06:52 PM I love that song!!!!!!!!! I like to make up goofy songs to make my kids smile, normally I get the "Mom, PLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEEEEE stop!". But I enjoy it so!!!!! Ten Ways to Motivate Your Child to Read - Blog Entry14 Jan 2007 09:55 PM Art, reading is soooo important! I'm glad you wrote this. #'s 4, 7 and 9 really ring true in our family. I am blessed to have a wonderful Mother that takes my kids to a used book store and they do just as you described, they make a "day" of it. My oldest has always loved to read, we've had teachers tell us that he rushes through his school work to read. He also used to take his Bible to school and read in his spare time. My youngest, until recently, has not liked to read. Now that he is older and can comprehend more, he LOVES to read books and then go see the movies. And reading the Bible together, is soooo important. We need to get back into doing that! |
