My father never helped with anything and my mom tried to get him to a least take interest in us. But after years of him missing band concerts, sports, graduations, etc; my brother and I just gave up on him. My father and his mom would say nasty things about our mother and it would make us cry. His mom would even send us nasty letters. Just be the best parent you can and in the end your kids will thank you! You are absolutely right; kids will sort things out for themselves.
