Tristi's Testimony - Blog Entry

Beautiful testimony, Tristi. Going to miss seeing you here, but I'm glad I found you somewhere else, as well! Best wishes in your new endeavors.

Are You Prepared for an Unexpected Change? - Blog Entry

18 Oct 2008 04:10 PM

I was just thinking about this the other day, Andrea. While we are covered (financially, at least) if something happens to dh, if something should happen to me, I'm not sure how well dh would manage. And the children's guardians if something happens to us both likely would not be willing to hs - although, as I think about it, our life insurance should more than cover tutors, etc.

Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking article!

The Church is Still True - Blog Entry

This reminds me of a talk - I think it was Elder Bednar - about not being offended. Since I have problems with my (LDS) in-laws, I've had to reread it frequently. It's a great point in that it reminds us that we ALSO have the agency to choose to be offended or not.

Now I have to go reread it again, LOL. Great article!

Using Book-it for homeschooling - Blog Entry

I think ultimately I'm going to hit the free-pizza-no-source-needed route. I think you are definitely right about not-paid-to-be-smart, and the motivation to record what is learned. Thanks so much!

After Tina Fey's Impersonation of Sarah Palin, SNL Mocks Homeschoolers - Blog Entry

16 Sep 2008 05:20 AM

I didn't see the skit - not a big SNL fan - but I can see both sides of the coin. On one hand, as the first respondent said, anyone who takes SNL seriously needs to have their head examined (not referring to you Andrea, just anyone who might watch it for "informational" purposes). On the otherhand, I wouldn't be surprised to find that most vieweres said, "Oh that is so dead on" - to both sides of the coin.

An Effort to Court Florida Homeschoolers Falls Short - Blog Entry

It's good to know Florida is interested in the financial results...er, I mean, the education quality of course...of our kids.

Homeschooling Older Kids - Blog Entry

12 Sep 2008 11:06 AM

The independence your kids are learning says a lot when folks are worried about those "controling" homeschool parents. I think a natural part of parenting - especially of teens - is balancing the protective "mom" instinct with the desire to let them grow and take responsibility for their actions, positive and negative. Sounds like your kids will be WAY too independent to be living at home at 30, LOL.

Pizza Hut Encourages Reading and Welcomes Homeschoolers Too - Blog Entry

I've been back and forth on this since I received my certificates in the mail (I went ahead and signed up, in case I opted "for"). I noticed that when we did the summer reading program with the library (and prizes), it became more about quantity and less about quality. That said, I like the fact that we can set the reading goals, be it books, pages, or minutes. I'll probably wind up weighing in "for", since my kids are already huge book-lovers and would read anyway, but it didn't help that I had just finished up one of Alfie Kohn's books when the packet came in the mail, LOL.

More Teachable Moments - Blog Entry

Thanks! I just checked my library online and they have the computer game (which is what I remember) as well. I've been wanting to play that with my kids, so I snagged the USA version. Woohoo! Feels like Christmas...

Misinformation About Homeschooling: Don't Believe the Lies! - Blog Entry

12 Sep 2008 10:45 AM

I know you didn't mean to make this humerous, but it is so absurd I have to laugh. What is up with the homeschooling uniform? Apparently I haven't paid my dues and been sent ours. If I'm home with the kids all day, you'd better BELIEVE I'm wearing jeans, and of course my children copy me!

Someone should point out that public school children are abused, too. One has nothing to do with the other.
