It's a running joke at our house - I tell them I'm going to send them to public school so they can learn to "sit down and be quiet." My daughter is very quiet and withdrawn when she enters new situations, but once she is comfortable, folks are surprised when I remind them that she was shy at first. Of course, I was NOT homeschooled, and was quiet and shy when we entered new situations. McHenry (in Baltimore), but it looks like we'll be bringing it up on Sunday! Side note of random dates, since we're learning about Columbus: Columbus left the Canary islands on the 10th of September for his first voyage to, er, the Indies. Good date to point out, and then consider how much time passed before they reached the Americas. I also think that science is like guns - as dangerous as the person "holding" them. Without scientists, we wouldn't know that the world was round or how to kill all those pesky microbes infecting our system. So you're right, we'll all disagree. What is most important, I think, is that those of us in charge of the kids - generally the parents - agree. Why Do Homeschoolers Speak Negatively of Schools? - Blog Entry06 Jul 2008 12:48 PM On a side note, I do tend to be negative towards schools overall, but positive towards teachers. We moved a lot and I had a *lot* of excellent teachers willing to work with me despite the fact that it created more trouble for them. My personal feeling is that the system is flawed, but many (albeit not all) of the teachers do their best despite it. So I think it's possible to distinguish between the two.
