There are so many smart remarks floating around in my head, comments about public schools being ideologically driven, decisions about whether or not we should bus all of our public school kids to the worst school in the area so as not to "cheat the system", etc. Grrr. While we've not yet run into this problem - we have monster children all weighing between 8 lbs 8 oz (my week-early baby) to 9 even - I could see where the problem could come from, and I know it helps others. We were in DC a few months ago and hit the museum of natural history and the zoo, which they loved; ditto with our trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty while dh was in NYC. We're traveling with him a great deal this year - in another 2 weeks we'll pack up our motorhome and travel 'til next winter. The kids love all the neat things we see, and even when we hit smaller cities and towns, we visit the library or the firestation (my oldest is not yet 6). Once I've recuperated from having this baby and gotten our schedule on track, I plan to spend some more time looking for things to do; we've been in a 'relax' period through my last trimester and recent birth! Our nursery had the child-covered door handles, which was a pain for the adults but far better than chasing kids through the hall. For my first baby, I was okay with my mom and MILthere, since it was their first grandchild. My MIL was in tears after I admitted I didn't want anyone but my husband with me for the next three. As a previous nursery leader, I've noticed that most kids are fine after a few minutes once their mom (or dad) leaves. As a mom, I know it can be tough to do when your kid is crying, but it generally is the best thing to do. If there is a serious problem, the nursery leader will come get you. Great blog!
