Teach Your Homeschooler About Plagiarism - Blog Entry

17 Jan 2007 04:03 PM

I can remember my very first act of plagerism; I transferred into a gifted class in school in the middle of a group project. I was probably in the 4th grade. The teacher put me in a group and told me the other kids would explain it to me; they told me that we were supposed to copy this passage from the encyclopedia. At the time, I thought it was weird, but the teacher said they'd tell me...LOL. I hadn't learned about plagerism, so it wasn't until a few years later that I realized just what had happened, but I obviously felt the 'wrongness' since I remembered it. I don't know why I hadn't thought about plagerism with homeschooling; probably because my kids are so long and most of the the time, I have them copying stuff to work on their handwriting, LOL. Great article!

If You Really Want My Opinion, Perhaps You Should Not Homeschool - Blog Entry

Great article. I love to gather information on all the various types of homeschooling and how various families have fit it to their needs, and then figure out how to adapt all that to my kids.

Birthday Parties- Are Some Parents Going Too Far? - Blog Entry

16 Jan 2007 11:33 AM

I don't know. I agree that a lot of parents go overboard. But for my DD's 5th birthday, we did a princess theme, and she really loved it. Of course, this was all homemade; she helped to make a dragon pinata, which was her favorite part, and I put out crowns for the kids to decorate. I wound up until about midnight the night before, but I also made the cake from scratch (don't ask me why, LOL) as well as the streamers (I cut out some triangular 'flags' and strung them with ribbon). I think our biggest cost was, um, maybe the stickers? I bought some stickers to do. For a goody bag, I printed out some princess and prince coloring pages off the internet and added a box of crayons. But I really did it for my DD, who loved every bit of it; she kept all the decorations for her room, not for 'others'. Still, overall, I'd say the tendency was towards too much.

Can You Borrow Your Way Out of Debt? - Blog Entry

Great plan, and some excellent points! I definitely wouldn't want my groceries and 'casual' spending to wind up making me lose my house!

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 2 - Blog Entry

15 Jan 2007 03:15 PM

LOL, our Sunday school is already off. Our branch president decided that we would all take the Teacher Development class for the next six weeks, so we're just completely off the page. I think we're supposed to be doubling up the Sunday school lesson for the weeks after that, which should also be fun! But the TD class is cool.

Thanks again! You've inspired me to actually look in the manual before church so when we drive home (30 mt drive) I can prompt my kids about what they learned in class. Suddenly, my 5 yo and my 4 yo could remember what they did! It was a miracle!

Would a Baby Ruth be a good treat? :P A great lesson, and I suppose one you've done recently; I'll need to put it together soon. Thanks for the great suggestions!

Welcome to the site! I am glad that you are enjoying the resources here and I hope you are a frequent visitor! I am sorry to hear about your daughter, but glad that her son has an obviously loving grandmother to care for him. Best of luck with your husband; be patient and strive to be a good example, and hopefully his heart will soften towards the gospel. Again, welcome!

Date for Your Family's Sake - Blog Entry

Great article! I wish I could remember, but one of the church leaders counseled something to the effect of "the best way to be a great parent to your kids is to be a great husband to your wife", or vice versa. I am thinking it was President Kimball, but only because I have read so much of his stuff. Anyway, it is completely true. If the parents aren't happy in the home, the kids easily pick up on it, and it negates a great deal of the rest of your influence.

Jumpstarting Journal Writing - Blog Entry

Great article, and as a genealogist, a great treasure! I am so glad you mentioned that journals are okay to vent in. We were doing a lesson in RS on journaling, and everyone was talking about their perfect-for-posterity journals. I raised my hand and said, doesn't anyone else just VENT and GRIPE and pour out their emotions in their journal? I got all these strange looks so I thought I was alone...then several sisters came up and thanked me afterwards, saying they do that, too. Good to know I'm not starting the revolution alone! ;)

Are You Planning on Winning the Lottery? - Blog Entry

11 Jan 2007 05:10 PM

Lottery winners have a higher-than-average divorce and suicide rate, and I think bankruptcy rate, too.

I don't play the lottery, but I am keeping my eye out for that million dollar winning ticket just laying on the ground....(I told my best friend this and I think she thought that was my serious financial plan, LOL!)
